Awesome! This is how I can describe the view driving up to Sapa at 6 in the morning. I was so enthralled by the view that he was literally sticking his head out of the van to take pictures. It took us an hour to get to the city of Sapa where we were taken to a hotel room for the sole purpose of taking a shower after the train ride. After freshening up and being told by Canh, the our former guide from Vietnam package travel, that it isnt advisable to take a backpack weighing so much on the treck my friends and I went about trying to figure out how we had so much weight. Penut butter jar? crackers? 20 granola bars? towels? and then proceeded to figure out what we actually did need ... read more

OK, folks – the theme of this post is, “We don’t have a clue.” It’s liable to turn into a sermon, so I apologize, but we learned so much recently about how people in other lands live (even after our trip to India) that I can’t resist writing. We’ve met so many people on this trip who believe that they’re surviving pretty well, living lives that are truly poverty-stricken according to American standards. Even though we’ve seen so much on our previous trips, this trip has been a good continuing lesson for us on our essential cluelessness about the real lives of most of the world’s people. We left Hanoi after one night and traveled northwest into another “ethnic minority” area, centered on the town of Sapa. After our time in the Central Highlands, we looked ... read more

What a difference a day makes...It's a struggle to leave the warm duvet, knowing in all probability the weather hasn't changed from yesterday. Still pretty cold in the hotel, but needs must, biological if nothing else and eventually stumble down into reception. Sunshine, yes it's the sun and there's a mountain peak. Rush for the camera just since this might be a short lived glimpse of Sapa scenery. And it is as the place is enveloped once again in thick fog. It's the last day in Sapa, at least I've seen a mountain! Oh look, it's clearing again - sunshine, warm sunshine too.... read more

16th – 18th Feb ’12 Sapa After a fitful night’s sleep and being woken an hour early but some woman screeching we’re here when we weren’t we pulled into Lao Cai – the border town between China and Vietnam and the jumping off point for Sapa. We stumbled off the train still in a daze and were met by a woman holding a board with Howard’s name on. Gratefully we climbed into the minibus which soon filled up and we were off on the journey over the mountains to Sapa. I have to say I didn’t see much as no sooner had we started and I nodded off. After an hour we arrived at our hotel and to our delight it was actually sunny and we got our first views of the mountains and valley. We ... read more

The way to Heikou - border town with Vietnam was quite scenic and we really loved the views surrounding the Red River. There were not many people going this direction so we were put in a small minivan rather than a bus but we were not alone on this journey. We shared this ride with a Scottish couple – Lorraine and Kevin who happened to go exactly in the same direction as us in SE Asia. The way we met was quite strange (as Kevin says), it was in a dark and empty Sunny Guesthouse very early in the morning and it went a little bit like that: Kev: Hey Guys, where are you going? Us: Hey, we are going to Heikou, how about you? Kev: Us too and then to Vietnam. What time is your ... read more

Sapa On the 2nd Jan we booked a train to leave that evening to Sapa which is North of Hanoi and in the mountains. Meant to be colder then Hanoi but I looked on the web and temperatures seemed similar at around 10-15c which we could handle I am sure. We had booked the cheapest sleeper compartment on the train possible which is the top bunks in the hard sleeper section. 6 bunk beds in one lockable room with the top bunks being the cheapest because you do not get as much head room as the other bunks but you do get a compartment at the bottom of the beds to keep all your belongings which is safer then storing them under the bottom bunk. Terry was not happy at first as really was a squeeze ... read more

Geo: 22.3945, 104.056We boarded the overnight train to Lao Cai with a bus connection straight uphill to Sapa. Since it takes 12 hours, the train offers up the very civilized option of sleeper cabins for the night but it's a cabin for 4 so you have to hope you aren't linked up with the heavy drinking and snoring types- we ended up with a couple of honeymooners but given the size of each of the berths (designed by the same guy who worked on that knee-crunching bus in Laos), the honeymoon would have to be delayed. Being stuck in the fetal position didn't make for the most restful sleep but there's something eminently romantic about train travel that adds a certain joy to every trip. The bus trip up the mountain was another story and we ... read more

Wracked with doubt, I find myself contemplating the point of all this work I am doing and the feed-back I am getting from others makes me question my motives. Should I or shouldn’t I? What’s the point? Is there a point? Am I doing more damage than good? Will I alter the fragile existence of lives with bullish western tactics and dreams not ready to be inflicted upon my poor victims? Is this all fed by narcissistic motivations? Am I really that egotistical? Do I have such shallow ulterior motives? I have sat every day in Joma cafe chomping on my usual sundried tomato bagel with egg and bacon and some other tasty filling which has led to my addiction along with multiple cups of ‘English Breakfast tea’ consumed with the task of setting up the Mao-Sue ... read more
