Remember that song from Cat Stevens- Morning has Broken?... "Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven Like the first dewfall, on the first grass Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden Sprung in completeness where his feet pass Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning Born of the one light, Eden saw play Praise with elation, praise every morning God's recreation of the new day" This is how I can describe the view driving up to Sapa at 6 in the morning. Jeff was so enthralled by the view that he was literally sticking his head out of the van to take pictures. It took us an hour to get to the city of Sapa where we were taken to a hotel room for the sole purpose of taking a shower after the ... read more

We woke up to the morning call of the chickens and the yelp of some dog . As we waited to start our second day of the treck the courtyard started to fill up with young women who heard of the "generous women who buys a lot of bracelets" - that's me folks- well not today! Today I was tired from a long night, no food and no mood for being begged to- so as we left the family stay house I wasnt very nice and the girls dissapeared to find someone else. We hiked through more rice fields, a bamboo forest that was extremely muddy. Jeff and I were very impressed with our guide whose shoes were still clean after 2 hours of hiking while our shoes were so covered in mud you couldn't see ... read more

When we first started organizing our trip to Vietnam ( mind you it was about 2 weeks before we got into the plane) we were told by many not to go in August. One overseas tour agency even tried to convince us to go in Febuary instead. Those comments were very disconcerting but at one point during the 14 day countdown Jeff and I decided that neither rain nor heat would dampen our fun. I have to admit that I was rather uptight about going up north especially since everyone was asking us if we had been vaccinated - which I had totally forgotten to do until it was too late! I was even more uptight by the fact that there was so much rain in Hanoi and I had read a blog from a women ... read more

Rano sme sa zobudili do krasne slnecneho dna. Krasny den nam nicili len, hlavne rano, komare. Znova nam ponukali mnozstvo veci na predaj a my sme znova neodolali a nakupili dalsie suveniry. Potom nas cakal uz len autobus ... read more

Tam Coc The day before I went to Tam Doc, I hung around in Hanoi. I visited the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum only to discover that it was closed. I should have arrived in the morning. As it turned out there was still plenty to see. The guards who are everywhere in this area, are all dressed in a white dress uniform with white gloves and hat and look very handsome. They monitor the demarcation zone around the mausoleum to ensure people do not come too close to the area. For 25,000dong I was able to visit the stilt house at the back of the palace that Ho Chi Minh lived in for quite a few years and I think not long before he died. It is a simple stilt house with an office and a ... read more

After walking in the rain to the train station we took the overnight sleeper train from Hanoi to Lao Cai. I really can’t understand why they are called sleeper trains because I don’t think I’ve had any kip on any of them yet. If you want to experience what it’s like to travel by sleeper train; whilst closing your eyes, get your wife, husband, boyfriend, girlfriend, neighbour, whoever, to grab you by the shoulders and shake you violently from side to side, then punch you in the arm to reinact you hitting the side of your bunk because the driver has needlessly slammed on the brakes, probably because he has dropped his beer or something! Anyway after nine hours of this torture we arrived in Lao Cai, safe in the knowledge that we wouldn’t have to ... read more

Rano sme dorazili do Sapy.

Sapa 2 The third day in Sapa and the most awesome place to visit. The landscape is hilly and the land is fertile and rich with plant life with a moderate temperature at this time of the year which is the rainy season. After breakfast with our team of six, one of Katerinas’ girls was sick, we left for yet another trek down the steep hill to the Cat Cat village where they colour hemp using plant extract and make their clothing from the marijuana plant. Some of the items for sale are machine made, but much of it is handmade and that includes the silver and tin products and the many colourful scarves, hats and bags that are available. By visiting the village we gained insight into the daily lives of the locals and how ... read more

This is Part 4 and also the final part of my 7-day solo trip in the North West of Vietnam by local bus and motorbike. Friday morning (July 20), I got a mini bus from Lai Châu to Lào Cai at 9am (115km). On this section I went on Hoàng Liên Sơn pass (altitude 2,030m) which is one of the most dangerous passes in northern Vietnam. The pass is 45km in length and shared by both provinces Lai Châu and Lào Cai. It was so misty on the Lai Châu side, while the sun was shining on the Lào Cai side. The mini bus also passed by Sapa which is a popular tourist destination in the North West region. I have been there twice, so I decided not to visit it on this trip. After I ... read more

Sapa The Intrepid group is no more and we have all gone our separate ways. It was sad to say goodbye to my American friend Darra this morning as we had had so much fun together and been there for each other over the last two and a half weeks. She was heading off to Bali and Lombock for another Intrepid trip with lots of sunshine and cultural experiences before flying back to Denver, Colorado. She will be sorely missed as I finish my travel without her presence. As I still had the whole day to fill in in Hanoi, I decided exercise was in order and headed up to the French quarter of the city as here is where many of the sightseeing places are such as the museums and the mausoleum that houses Ho ... read more
