This entry has been written a few months after we left Vietnam. The original was lost in a recent server crash hence we have just entered in point form as our memories are a little hazy!! The photos tell most of the story anyway! We arrived in the border village Lao Cai, nice and early around 6am after our overnight train. Managed to get a little bit of sleep despite the nattering and smoking outside our carriage door by the staff. We were hoarded onto a bus in the ensuing chaos and driven along the scenic road to the beautiful mountain village of Sapa. Fortunately we had a hotel pre-booked and so got to settle into our room and catch up on some sleep. Ventured out later for some brekky and a look around. Sapa ... read more

I fear we have been lulled into a false sense of security. We took our first night train in Vietnam on Sunday night, and having had a couple of scary night train experiences in the past (Eastern Europe. Eugh.), our hopes weren't high. But I gotta tell ya - it was a joy! Grand little cabin with four beds (not six), air conditioning, a dinky little bedside table, and a lamp with frilly fringes! And before we even left the station a little man came around with his trolley, offering such delights as cold beer, coke and crisps. Are we really still in Vietnam. Of course the downside of the experience was arriving at our destination at 5.30am. Oucha. And of course, total and utter mayhem awaited us at the station. It was like Hanoi airport ... read more

Day 73 (cont.) Boarding the bus we met a couple from England (Jude and Sean) who confirmed that we were in the right place - good news. Settling down for the night we were quietly excited about our next country. Day 74 The bus journey, however, turned out to be a bit more of a drama. About 2:00 am we awoke from a rare passage of sleep to shouts and people running off the bus - it was only when we got off that we realised that people had mistaken steam coming from the engine for smoke and were convinced that the bus was on fire! After 20mins letting it cool a bit we limped on until the bus driver filled up the dehydrated bus from a hose on the side of the road. The ... read more

Sa Pa Asia » Vietnam » Sapa By Steve SarahJune 4th 2007S&S After a great overnight train ride up from Hanoi, we spent two days exploring Sa Pa in the north of Vietnam. This little mountain town is surrounded by hill tribe villages and loads of rice paddies. The villages themselves are fairly close to each other (a few kms apart), but the different ethnic groups all have their own clothing, traditions and very distinct languages which is surprising. Further, they don't inter-marry and there is clear village rivalry between groups. Normally girls get married here around 15 years old, and we saw tons of young girls carting around babies. We met a woman who is also 28 and ... read more

As we traveled back to Hanoi, we were trying to figure out what to do next (since nothing was set in stone for our travels). We decided to take the night train to Sapa. We spent the afternoon before leaving figuring out the process of buying train tickets in Hanoi and then watched the water puppet show. It is a thousand year old traditional folk story telling at its best. After the show we filled our bellies with more rice noodles and headed on the night train to Sapa. We arrived 30 km down the mountain to Sapa at 6am on Wednesday. Quickly the locals were escorting us to buses to take up to Sapa. With a little bit of confusion, we finally found a minibus to Sapa. The views were spectacular, however, one of ... read more

Last Day in Ha Noi May 22 The last night in Ha Noi was not so good cause my iriver (music player) busted and I couldn't fix it. That has to be fixed since I will be travelling long ass distances in China on train or bus. Need to drown out the hoarkers! Totally sux. I was catching the overnight train (9:55pm) so I had all day to do nothing once again. Well actually I went to pickup my china visa in the morning, which thankfully was ready. But the only thing that I didn't think about was the fact that it was activated the date of issue (17 May), so I have already wasted time not being in China. Doh. I went to the Ho Chi Minh masoleum and the museum after visa pickup. ... read more
