After the lively supper in SaPa, and well informed briefing from our guide Dinh, it was time to set off to Ban Ho village. Dinh was a real character - his name is pronounced 'Ding' as in ding dong, or ding dong the witch is dead. He has a penchant for karaoke, which is taken very seriously in these parts, and is particularly fond of 'I'm all out of love', theme song from titanic, hello is it me you are looking for (Lionel ritchie) and various others with a slant towards love songs. We were regularly informed over the trek of his recent marriage to his lovely wife and the 16 day old baby that is producing sleepless nights (and I imagine good post natal contraception) for him. This slight moiuntain goat of a man is ... read more

I arrived in Vietnam on Wednesday, having crossed over from the (really cute!) Chinese border town of Hekou. From Lao Cai on the Vietnamese side I caught a van headed to Sapa where I found myself a simple room for 6 USD overlooking the nearby mountains and valley and booked myself onto a three-day trek to see some minority villages and occupy my time. My main reason for being here was to see the Sunday market in Bac Ha village, which is apparently not to be missed. So I had a few days to kill and couldn't think of a better way to do it than walking about 30km through Vietnamese countryside. I booked through one of the many tour agencies on Sapa's main road and almost as soon as I walked out it started to ... read more

Hello Hello! Well Patrick and I are in great spirits as we returned yesterday morning (at 4 am!) from a 3 day trek in the province of Sapa. Sapa is province (as well as a town) in Northwest Vietnam, and contains many ethnic minorities/hill tribes. The town itself is situated on top of one of the many mountains in the area, and overlooks a landscape of terraced rice paddies, rivers, and more mountains, including Fansipan mtn, Vietnam's highest at 3000 m. The area is a beautiful green colour, mixed with yellow as the rice paddies encompass most of the region. We booked a 3 day trek, including 2 nights home stay, through Sapa, with a local H'mong girl as our guide. The H'mong are one of the largest ethnic minority groups in Sapa, and are known ... read more

I just came back from a wonderful weekend in Sapa, which is probably the most beautiful place in the world! After an 8 hour train ride on a night train (very bumpy and uncomfortable) we arrived in Sapa early Saturday morning. After breakfast we had a few hours to relax in our awesome hotel rooms. It's amazing hoe much we take the little things for granted at home, such as our beds. It was heaven! At 2 o'clock we went to the lobby at met our tour guide Co, a 20 year old local girl who was very nice. Followed by half the girls and women of the town we walked down the mountain to visit the Cat Cat Village - part of the Black H'mong tribe. It was interesting to see how the locals lived, ... read more

We took the over night train from Hanoi to Lao Cai in northern Vietnam on the chinese border. From here a minibus took us to the village of Sapa where we met our guide, a cheeky little local girl called Chi with a quick turn of phrase. The first days trekking involved a 12km hike through the mountains to a local village where we stayed the night with a local family. We had a fantastic time here with the other people in our group, an australian couple Lynda & John and a German called Thomas. We went swimming in the river with kids from the village before dinner. The family and the guide made a massive feed for us before they brought out the rice wine (think moonshine!!) Needless to say we were glad to have ... read more

It is still Friday 31st August There was the wait for 7.00pm pickup to the railway station on the way to Sapa - then it was changed to 8.00 I had time to do a little wander down the alley to the night market and then taxied to the Hanoi railway station with a guide and two other people. The guide then said to me to just wait there - it was in the middle of two train tracks!!!! He would be back. Did as I was told but then started to think I was going to miss my 9.00 train. Oh no, madam, plenty of time. Goes at 9.45 !!!! I was on my way to Sapa !! Didn't do this trip last year and regretted. The overnight train trip was good and managed to ... read more

Sapa is brilliant if you’re into to trekking round mountains and hills. We arrived at 5.30am on overnight train, Trekked all morning with guide Mia who had great English, came across a funeral wake on top of the mountain, eerie enough site, buffalo was slaughtered as a feast and just like a wake at home people gather round to pay respect. The people here are all tribal so every village has a different tribe. The colour of clothing they wear distinguishes between them. Next day it lashed rain all morning, we set off with our guide and a junket of women, there aim is they'll help you along once you buy something off them at the end of the day usually handmade gifts etc. No part of the mountain is left untouched here, rice is grown ... read more

My overnight train arrived in Lao Cai at 5am and I was immediately bombarded by touts wanting to drive me the 1 ½ hours to Sapa. Trying to deal with touts in daylight is annoying enough. Now that I was doing this in the dark and half asleep, I was far from a happy camper. I teamed up with Ildy, a Hungarian girl that I met exiting the train. Together we randomly chose a tout offering a decent price from the herd surrounding us in the parking lot. Ildy and I piled into the back of the van with other tired and disoriented passengers. I laid my head against the window and fell fast asleep for the next 45 minutes. I groggily looked out the window as the sunshine woke me up and immediately became stunned ... read more
