A super long and incredibly needed sleep later (fell asleep at 8:30 pm), I boarded a bus which picked up Mom and Dad en route and we drove out east to the coast. Ha Long City is right at the mouth of the Red River and is also home to some incredibly beautiful scenery. The bay is full of towering limestone karst islands (1,969 of them to be exact!) which is almost too awesome for words - so I've added lots of pictures to this post! We boarded a big river boat style ship that held about 30 people. It was full but didn't feel crowded at all. We definitely hit the jackpot with this boat as the stateroom we had was so beautiful, it had a balcony and a shower with multiple shower head/jet/spray options. ... read more

Last day of the Mangrove expedition and planting is all done. Our day started out with the usual briefing. News came that the boat trip was cancelled. Clear skies turned gray and rainy again and it was felt that it was not safe on the water. Hotel check out took some time due to a hick up with my bill. In that confusion news of the boat cruise was back on. I was not too excited about getting out on the sea in such stormy weather conditions. I tried to conceal my worry with quiet reflection but I was soon found out. We drove through a resort in route to the pier to board the boat. It looked to be abandoned or incomplete. There were shells of buildings that seemed to have been started and but ... read more

Today began as most since arriving here, filled with a downpour of rain. We were standing sill onthe road for a while on yesterday due to mud slides. The terrain is very mountainous and it has not stopped raining in days. I began with breakfast in the hotel restaurant. I had Phu, fried rice and stir fried cabbage. Not usual choices but all my meal selection have been chosen for me during this tour. After eating we retrieved to the lobby to wait on our morning briefing. While there is no guarantee, we are told the boat cruise and lunch on Halong-Bay Bay was still on. We loaded up and shortly thereafter comes news that due to the rain, the boat cruise is cancelled. This leaves us room to get some souvenir shopping done. First stop ... read more

Same schedule today but different. It is still raining in Quang-Ninh so our schedule is subject to change. The rain is beginning to get to me. I am a little concerned but not too much. I just wish for a pause. Our first stop was a school where we were to meet with local kids and teach them the importance of Mangrove Forrest and there impact/importance to the environment. After a two hour drive we finally reached. We were received warmly, the kids all assembled and we're very curious with there stares. We would waive hello and they would turn there gaze and laugh among themselves. The awards and presentation of gifts were held under a tent in the school yard outdoors. It was still raining. After the thanks you's and speeches we moved to the ... read more

Our motorcade load up and headed out promptly at 6:50 am. Our destination, Dong Rui Commune, Tien Yen District, Quan Nih Province. It was raining heavily and the humidity high. Our schedule was tight but subject to change due to weather and it's affect on areas we were to visit and participate in planting. The landscape here is green and chocked full of trees everywhere. Our first stop was a school where we to participate in a welcoming and awards ceremony. Attendees included local town folk, local leaders, celebrities, members of the red cross, and representative of the People's Republic. There were lots of speeches and thanks you's mostly spoken in Vietnamese and Japanese. Some attempts at English were made but we had our translator to brief us on what was going on. The venue was ... read more

Day 3 Late night last night packing my back pack whilst Lesley slept she is so organised! Up at 7am, omelette and bread breakfast. Lesley didn't sleep as lots of noise outside. I heard nothing and slept right through! Bus came to pick us up, 3 hours drive to Ha Long. Tiny bus lots of people. Not enough room for all the bags and people. Lesley ended up sitting on half a chair and backpacks.I slept most of the way. Bit chaotic getting tickets and getting on the boat. It wouldn't have passed Capt Ogden's requirements! Ha Long Bay is beautiful. Little fishing boats, san pans, floating markets, stunning scenery and birds. We had booked one night on the boat and one in Cat Ba, 3 days in total. We were a bit put out as ... read more

Phewwww..... Difficult nights sleep last night. I went to bed happy and content...only to be awoken at 2am by the bloody dustcart! I'm not sure how long it was there, it seemed like half am hour, at least! Helen slept through the noise, also the disturbance of me banging round looking fort ear plugs! I didn't manage to find them, so settled fort iPod earphones instead.... Finally i managed to get back to sleep. We were up at about 6.45 this morning. breakfast in the hotel was omelette sandwich and a cup of tea. This bus will be arriving at 8 - 8.30 to take us to Ha Long Bay. I expect it will take about 3 and a half hours to get there. We are going on a short cruise, 3 days and 2 nights. ... read more

With this being our 2nd and last day on the boat I think most of us were quite happy to get off it! Starting with wishing Hayley a Happy birthday and giving her the card and a cake (which wasn't looking its best) that id brought her yesterday - she was chuffed. Making our way upstairs we had breakfast which was a few slices of bread with a very uninspiring egg. The crew then wanted us to check out of our rooms by 08.30 presumably so they could go and have a lay down before the next lot of tourists come on board! Sailing back over to Cat Ba island which was a few hundred metres away was to be our first and well, only stop of the day! Dropping some more people off ( who ... read more
