Here are some words to describe the bus ride from Hue to Phong Nha: terrifying. fast. harrowing. confusing. unsleepable (it's a word now). We woke up wicked early in the morning in Hue, packed, ate a quick breakfast at the hostel, and then were rushed out with all of our stuff to another one of those tiny Vietnamese buses that doesn't fit Westerners. I actually had to stick both my legs out into the aisle. Smaller than airplane seats. Sylvan was on a day tour of Phong Nha, and I was going to my hostel. But we were on the same bus. Confusing point number 1. Then the tour started, led by a Vietnamese man who barely spoke English. I mostly stuck my headphones in and tried to sleep while the bus twisted and turned at ... read more

We arrived at our hostel in Da Nang, which is another coastal city. We got settled and went out for another motorbike ride. We had spent a little over $5 on the motorbike rental and wanted to get the full value of the money out of it, after all. We drove along the coast up to the peninsula. On the way, it started raining, so we pulled over at a little cafe where no one spoke English. I tried to ask for coffee. I tried to ask for Coca Cola. I tried to ask for tea. They gave me warm beer. Once it stopped raining, we continued on up some mountain roads with beautiful views of Da Nang. We drove up a very sketchy steep narrow concrete road for a long time. At one point, the ... read more

One last day in Hanoi Saturday 14th November 2015 Still a bit worn out from the trip and with another night train to Hue looming in the evening, we took it slow today and used it to catch up on life. After a late breakfast, we headed over to the backpacking area where the streets are lined with small restaurants, bars & coffee shops. We settled ourselves in a small coffee shop, where the star of the show was a small rabbit who would happily hop around the customers and accept cuddles and attention from anyone willing to give it. The day was spent happily drinking coffee, eating croissants, and catching up on blogs & plans for Vietnam. With our train time fast approaching we headed back to the area of the hotel to get dinner ... read more

We mastered walking across the streets. Once you see a 3 Metre break among the buses, scooters and bikes you just walk straight ahead in a steady pace. Works best when there's someone bigger and taller than you or an elderly Vietnamese person leading the way. We saw typical tourist spots provided by Viking: Ho chi Minh mausoleum, palace and regular living quarters, the Temple of Learning, and Museum of Vietnamese ethnology (good gift shop). The rest of the time the 4 of us wader ed through the old town and around the lake taking a thousand pictures of people carrying outrageous amounts of things on scooters, people squatting on tiny stools having lunch, interesting items to sell, people welding, sewing, painting, building right on the sidewalk. In fact sidewalks were either scooter parking lots, food ... read more

Monday, 6 July - walked into Hoi An to do some more sightseeing. Visited the Market which is a brilliant insight into how the locals live and eat. Early in the morning they set up their stalls with fish, seafood, chicken, pork and vegetables. It is a riot of colours and frenetic activity. First we visited the Minh Huong Ancestral Hall which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built by Chinese settlers in the late 18th century who obtained vietnamese citizenship to worship their ancestors and who had founded the Minh Huong village. Deities worshipped here include the Thien Hau Holy Mother, the God of Earth, and the God of Fortune. The temple also used to serve as the administrative office of the Minh Huong village council. Even today the temple is used by ... read more

Early start. I waLked In and proceeded in to Terminal 1 @ Narita and I was one of three people there. It was really really early when I got there. I checked and headed to Tully's for a Caffè mocha and a donut. After an hour I checked in to the counter and located the Secretariat for our trip. Two hours later we were on our way. The flight was 5 hours but smooth. They served lunch, hot, on real plates. I met a new frnd Sahito. A very nice young guy who was headed to Hanoi for vacation. We got to know one another during the flight to pass time. Five hours later we landed. Immigration lines were terrible and long. behind me was a trio folks who didn't believe in giving one their personal ... read more

Day 6 - Hue It's 5.30am, we are in the bus to Hue. I have slept well, but I usually do! I seem to have the ability to be able to sleep anywhere! Being on the bus hasn't really been any different to being in bed! I woke up because the bus stopped to do a pick up, four and a half hours to go, so think I'll get back to watching the film I was watching last night; The Killing Fields. I didn't manage to finish the film; I just kept on falling to sleep! It was a long journey, twelve and a half hours, but amazingly, I didn't notice! Probably due to excess sleeping.... Lol We decided to have breakfast on the way to the hotel in order to shorten the walk with our ... read more

Saturday, 4 July we had a 3.5 hr transfer by car via Danang which looks like an up and coming seaside destination. After unpacking we walked into Hoi An and visited the Old Town. First stop was a Japanese enclosed bridge first constructed 1590. It was flattened by the French to enable vehicles to cross but was restored in 1986. Hoi An is a mecca for clothes shoppers, especially those wanting tailored suits. Next we visited a typical Viet house, Tan Ky House -owned by same family for 7 generations. In 1964 it was flooded to above my height as shown by a marker on the wall. There were also Chinese poems in inlaid mother of pearl On the walls. From there we walked to Quan Than House which is 3 centuries old, again with Chinese ... read more

Once again Agus fell asleep before dinner. This time he couldn't even make it before we found a place to eat. Fair enough I guess, we wanted to find a new place to eat at that's not always an easy or quick process. The restaurant we decided on was very flash French/Vietnamese mash up. Before we knew it we were weeshed up to the second floor and out to a balcony seat setup for two. There were 5 staff to an empty restaurant. Three of them took turns looking after Elsie while I had Agus slumped across my spread thighs. Nina still can't believe how many times she has eaten dinner using a knife AND a fork at the same time. Agus has requested a trip on a big bus, so today we are taking a ... read more
