It's cold!!! Don't know what has happened to the weather but the sun has gone and the rain is here! Suddenly I am glad to have my fleece! It has been a source of constant annoyance for the last few weeks because it does not fit in my bag. The conical hats which I now have, have taken over that role. If the sun does come out again I will be in real bag trouble! We arrived in Hue two days ago after driving from Hoi An. It is supposed to be a stunning drive but as it was raining hard and VERY misty we could barely see out of the bus window let alone anything else! We did a motorbike tour yesterday and it was fantastic. It was definitely one of the best things we ... read more

We are now in Vietnam. We have travelled many more miles since the last entry on a large number of modes of transport including boat, bus, plane, cyclo and foot. We are currently in Hue. We visited the Citadel this morning. It was badly damaged during the Vietnam War but is still lovely. It was raining so the whole place was misty. It looks how I would imagine the Forbidden City in Beijing to look (perhaps someone wants to take me so I can compare!) Not long left in Asia now. Off to NZ next...... read more

After an excellent and very busy/drunken adventure in the Northern Islands of Vietnam we boarded the night train to Hue in Ha Noi. The train was good, 14 hours in a sleeper cabin with these 2 Vietnamese dudes, one of whom was afraid of the dark as he never put his light off all night, Fiona took the top bunk as I couldn't climb due to the injury I had sustained on the bus back to Ha Noi from Halong Bay. I was sitting in the seat minding my own with my foot in the isle when we turned a sharp corner and a French women's suitcase, one of those tip-top Samsonite numbers, (no doubt filled with cheese and plans on how to surrender) fell from the overhead store on to my foot, 'luckily' it hit ... read more

Moving South OK so I'm statrting to get a little bit beind in this thing so I will aspire to be briefer. I decided to get the open bus ticket that goes from Hanoi to Ho Chi Min (Saigon). The buses here can travel at a max speed of 50km/hr (30km/hr through the towns. The longer journeys take up to 14 hours but luckily they're generally over night (not that you can sleep with the bus honking and jolting every 20 seconds) Hue Hue is the old capital of Vietnam. The morning I arrived I jumped on the back of a motorcycle and go for a cruise around the sites. There are a lot of pagodas in Vietnam! After a whole day of siteseeing I finished up at the Citadel which is the the old home ... read more

After an uncomfortable overnight bus journey (Asian buses are not designed for people with long legs and the drivers like to use the horn, just to warn everyone that they are there - all night) from Hanoi, we arrived in Hue. After checking into a very nice hotel for $15 a night for all three of us, we were besieged by motorbike drivers who would take us on a tour of the tombs that Hue is famous for. As we had only just arrived, we put them off by promising to do it the next day and went off to find somewhere to eat and to explore the town. After wandering around for the afternoon, including a stroll along the river, looking for the boats we had been told about in Hanoi (where you are entertained ... read more

Wednesday (I think...) I settled myself into my 4 berth, air conditioned sleeper destined for Hue. I was sharing with a Vietnamese family of 4. Mum and Dad worked for the Vietnamese Governement and spoke almost fluent English, their 7 yr old son could speak and pronounce better english than what I could, and their 2 yr old son who was just sooooo cute... (he couldnt speak english, but we'll let him off cos he couldnt speak Vietnamese either!) I had THE BEST nights sleep on the train ever! Until I was woken at 6am by some wailing Vietnamese woman's singing being piped through the speakers! We were served Beef noodles for breakfast (hey... I'll eat anything at any hour... not fussy!) Well, it was kinda like a pot noodle. There was a big tank of ... read more

Hey All, Let's wish me better luck with this today than last night when I spent the better part of an hour typing only to have the save not save. Lordy! As we wait to catch a bus to Hoi An, let me get you caught up on the last few days. On Sunday, back in Ninh Binh, we went to Cuc Phuong to see the Endangered Primate Rescue Center. Filled with langurs specific to Vietnam and gibbons rescued from the animal markets, they are kept in cages (suspiciously like a zoo) while they are nursed back to health. Afterwards, they are released into the surrounding area then separated from their caged breatheren by an electric fence. (What?) You take a 20 minute tour with a guide, make you donation, snap some photos and are on ... read more

Before climbing into the airport shuttle I got talkin' to a friendly German (Claus) and his sweet YOUNG Saigon girl, Mai....(Yes, he's far greater in years and ....greater in economic status...such are the pairings of the world....tis a theme....the emperor can have many wives.....)We were due to depart (via Vietnam airways) the oppresive Hanoi sun bound for yet more oppressive heat in Hue. I'm feeling feint and dizzy and am told its just the local coffee.... Hue, located in central Vietnam, is the famous former (imperial) capital of Vietnamm. A taxi ride later (with an English couple (Gavin and Helen)) and after checkin' in to the immaculate and sun drenched Binh Duong II guesthouse (10$), I'm headin' over Phu Xuan bridge downtown to the citadel and to see the forbidden purple city. Yes, they have a ... read more

I have just had the best few days of my trip thus far. Am convinced that the only way to see this country is from the back of a motorbike. A real motorbike. Last time I wrote, I was about to leave Hoi An with a backpack full of new digs. I ditched my tourist bus ticket and Dale and Katherine, the Aussie couple, picked me up from my hotel. They hired a couple local fellows to drive us up the coast to Hue in a car! When you're on a bus, you really only get to see the highway. It was so nice to be able to stop when we felt like a drink or wanted to take a photo. Or to use the bathroom. There are no bathrooms on those dang busses. We stopped ... read more
