Dalat is the most visually stunning city I have been to since I began travelling. 1500 meters above sea level, with archatecture heavily influenced by the french, it felt more like a european ski resort town than an old asian city. The buildings were slim, tall, and stood out due to their array of bright solid colors. There was a large well kept lake in the middle of the town, and the geography of the city was very hilly. I arrived in Dalat just as the sun was setting, which really helped accentuate it's magnificence. Soon after the sun set, and after I had checked into a hotel (with a Korean guy who had just come to Vietnam from Austrailia), we went out into the streets for a stroll. It was cold outside, and not just ... read more

well yesterday we spent a whole day wasted on the bus winding up and down the biggest mountains and going 25km/h. Only a 300 km journey that took us 7 hours...ohh it was sooo much fun!..our ipods ran out of battery after being fully charged thats how fun it was!! So dalat is up in the mountains and its cold again...uniforms are back!. We did our first bit of 'backpacking' as we decided to walk to our hotel instead of getting a taxi despite a million eager offers..our bags are definately getting heavier!! so found our hotel then off to explore the city and meet up with our uni friend dave and his girlfriend Kristy...it was so exciting to see someone from home!! Had a few drinks in the dodgiest place dim lighting, corny music and ... read more

Chau! I tell you what, this alliteration thing for the titles is getting harder, wish I hadn't started it. I don't think I'll ever make a headline writer! It feels like a month since I last wrote, I'm completely losing track of days since every day is like a Saturday. It's such a hard life! We left Saigon last Monday and headed north overnight to Nha Trang which is one of Vietnam's beach resort areas. Brendan was doing his three day scuba diving course so I was glad to have Eddie along to keep me company. On the first day we got there I headed to the local market to buy some running gear. I decided to take it up again to help keep me motivated with the no smoking and also because my intake of ... read more

Good afternoon ladies and gents. After an inertia inducing three days in Nha Trang where we did nothing much we've had a couple of action packed days. Don't you just love early nights that allow you to get a good nights sleep and awake refreshed for a day's activity. I believe I mentioned the possibility of one at the end of the last blog. Didn't happen. Went to the Why Not bar (again) for a quiet social drink and met the Norwegians there as well as an English couple (Alex and Verity who we're going to catch up with in Saigon). Evening progressed fine until they organised another killer pool tournament. I managed not to win, thus avoiding the free rum. I came second to a Vietnamese guy who works at the bar and also does ... read more

Hey all after my intense day in Saigon I did another semi-intense day where I got to see tunnels people hid, and basically lived, in during the war. it got a little claustrophobic but I wanted to get a feeling for what it must have been like so I persevered. loads of people bailed early (wimps) but I could understand when the guy ahead of me, who must have been like 6'3" ducked out. and they even made them about double the height so that tourists wouldn't have to crawl in the dirt. that night I met up with Si Heng again to say thanks and good bye, which was really nice because I have no idea when I'll see him again. so now I'm in Dalat, a place I really like, other than the fact ... read more

We had to be up at 6am to get the bus, which was grand. Although Dalat looked very close on the map it took nearly 10 hours to get there! We were dropped at the Pacific Hotel, the rooms looked ok and were cheap so we decided to stay there. After dumping our stuff we headed out for a bite to eat, and were approached by two easyrider motor bike tour guides who convinced us to book a tour with them the next day. The next day we met our guides at the hotel at 9am to start our tour. Our first stop was the Dragon Temple. After that we headed out of the city and stopped to admire the neatly arranged small farms. Dalat has a unique climate due to its high altitude, which makes ... read more

We arrived in the mountain city of Dalat after spending a cramped day on a bus (well, I was cramped, Sharon could fit into a Mini behind the Hulk and still have space). We were now heading back up into the clouds and the curving uphill roads proved difficult on both the bus and our nerves. It was with great relief that we got off the bus, amazed to still be alive. We immediately went in search of the famous Easy Riders, our only reason for making the journey. We were told they hang out at the Peace Cafe, and this proved both true and easy to locate. Sitting down to a banana pancake with chocolate sauce we met Khoa (Dave) & Lucky who spent the better part of an hour poring over maps and putting ... read more

After the coach turned up late, we got on to find we had the last two seats, right at the front on opposite sides of the aisle, with no leg room! Great! After four hours and lots of persuading, the driver finally pulled over by a cafe for all of us to get off and get some lunch and more importantly, use the loo!! After a 45min break we got back on for a mostly steep climb up the mountains. We had some amazing views, and a nice cool breeze. After another 4 hours we finally arrived in Da Lat at about 5pm. It was nothing like H and I had expected. Allot bigger and more built up. The coach dropped us off outside a hotel run by the same tour company as that which runs ... read more
