We left Saigon for the Central Highlands. Winding our way up through the mountains on our periless trip taking us to Da Lat. Da Lat is the Vietnamese's honeymoon capital. In our case it was a big disaster, it was cold, damp and had torrential rain. Tara caught an awful cold and spent most of the few days there wrapped up. The rain was relentless so we gave up and headed for the coast. All the photo's we have are on the road from the bus, it really was too wet to do anything while in Da Lat! We slowly watch the clouds disappear as we head down the mountains. Oh, to see the sun and sea again! ... read more

The sleeper bus is not as horrific as it sounds - it's only half full and I manage to find somewhere to put my legs. Before we know it, we're bouncing along a coastal road into Nha Trang at about 5am, with a big orange sun rising through the window. The beach is bustling with hundreds of people swimming in the sea and doing aerobics on the promenade. It's like we've stumbled on a secret world of exercising Vietnamese. Couple of hours to wait for our connection (that sounds a bit jet-set - basically it was another bus), which then takes a few hours more. We arrive in Dalat later that afternoon, bringing to an end a marathon 20-hour and 740km journey. Two severely numb rumps. We scoff some tea at a recommended canteen, packed full ... read more

We go out for breakfast and on our way back bump into the group that we bumped into at Sihanoukville and then at Ho Chi Minh. They have bought bikes and are making their way, a la Top Gear, up to the North. From the stories they tell us it sounds like they are having a great adventure. We’re off on a sightseeing trip this afternoon. First stop is the Crazy House and I instantly fall in love with all the quirky rooms and features - in fact, I have found my dream house! After that it’s a visit to a waterfall. I have a go on a roller coaster, where you control the car yourself (Rik gives it a miss as he’s a bit worried about the health and safety implications). It is great, driving ... read more

We had booked an open bus ticket (on a VIP bus!) to take us from Ho Chi Minh City up through Vietnam as this meant we could get off the bus at our chosen stops and we didn’t have to worry about booking onward transport. We chose the option that would take us to Da Lat, Nha Trang, Hoi An, Hue and finally Hanoi. This would involve two stages being undertaken at night on a sleeper bus, so we were keen to see how good these would be. Our first destination for a couple of nights was the city of Da Lat, nestled amongst the hills of the Lang Bian Plateau and formed around the man-made Xuan Huong Lake, which would see us at an elevation of just under 1500m. Unlike the steamy Ho Chi Minh ... read more

In Da Lat, you constantly have people offering local sightseeing tours, whether you are in your hotel, in a cafe or on the street. We avoid the hotel tout and go out in search of breakfast. On the way, every moto driver offers us a tour. I find that telling people that you have already booked with your hotel works a treat and you are immediately left alone. We sit down for breakfast and find that the cafe is swarming with tour touts. A man sits with us and I use the line about having booked with our hotel. We end up chatting about football as there is a Man United match tonight and it turns out he is a Man United fan, too. We go to the local market, which is pretty large and sells ... read more

We are off to Da Lat today. Our bus is due at 1.00 pm so it’s a reasonable start for once. We go for a swim after breakfast and get packed for 12 as we are intending to go to our favourite restaurant before boarding the bus. However, the bus turns up at 12 and tells us it is leaving in ten minutes. There go Rik’s oysters! It is a tiny minibus and is soon packed out, with every seat taken and luggage crammed in to every available space. It is not the best journey we’ve had. We are pretty hungry (especially as we didn't manage to grab our lunch) but when we stop at a restaurant, the driver tells us we have ten minutes. We all visit the loos as quickly as possible and board ... read more

So we wake up early and have our lovely buffet breakfast and head off to the bus company's office and say goodbye to Nha Trang and the beautiful beaches we have just stayed at...the bus happens to be a mini bus with about enough room for me to fit my legs between the seats...Mike sat by the aisle although that didn't help much he wriggled most of the way as he was uncomfortable and sore....not so bad for us but the poor 6 foot 3 man was really struggling! We left on the a nicely sealed road and wined our way through the roads along the coastline....we passed the daimond resort famous for 2008 miss world contest....wow it really is a lovely place and the private bay and beach was just stunning! We continued and eventually ... read more

The bus journey to Da Lat was by far the scariest I have done so far as after we had left the dusty roads running through the valleys we headed up into the mountains where the roads where steep, narrow and all had huge drops over the side. On top of this the driver felt it necessary to drive at the maximum speed possible for each corner - in the end it was better to just not look out the window! We arrived in Da Lat at eight in the evening. The first thing we noticed was that unlike everywhere else in South East Asia Da Lat was cool and in the evenings many would consider it cold. The town grew under the French rule as the French people in Saigon went to Da Lat for ... read more

So - we wound our way through a hilly and sparse region of Vietnam that we had never seen before. Homes were not lined up in a row along the road -- but were dispersed throughout coffee plantations and red clay dirt mounds... We bounced and turned and climbed through the cool sunshine until out of nowhere appeared a grouping of yellow buildings and some colorful flags blowing in the wind. We had arrived!! The scene was much more tentative than our first dedication in Southern Vietnam 2 years ago - and definitely more calm and controlled than our revisit to that same school just a few days ago. These Churu (ethnic minority) children appeared shy - and were interested in having the celebration, but not so interested in meeting our eyes. We were informed by ... read more

Today - we seized an opportunity to just relax. The weather was so cool and sunny -- and we didn't have any major plans for the day. The morning was spent touring the Summer Palace of the last King of Vietnam -- and then we visited the most enchanting monastery called Truc Lam (Bamboo Forest). It's a place where people come to learn meditation, and the monks chant for several hours several times a day. It is so peaceful and inviting -- with labyrinth gardens, wind chimes and the unexpected warm smell of pine. Afterwards, we took a sky cab (mini gondola) ride across fields of terrace gardens and pine forest. What a great way to see the countryside! We arrived back in the city of Dalat and went to lunch at a cafe owned by ... read more
