So when I said it was going to be a 20h bus ride from Danang to Dalat, looks like I was being a little optimistic! Thanks to a supposed "big accident" involving the bus that was supposed to pick us up from the transfer stop at Nha Trang, we were delayed by almost 5h as we awaited the next available bus that the company could send us. As we were stranded at the transfer office, I asked them whether I could change my ticket and take the bus the next morning, thinking I could at least explore the beach resort of Nha Trang for one day instead of waiting around. The guy said no, and when I asked why not since the bus was delayed through no fault of mine, he merely said, "Your bus late, ... read more

We arrived in Vietnam after a midnight sleeper bus from Siem Reap to Pnom Penh, Cambodia. From Pnom Penh we crossed the border (relatively seamless) and arrived in Ho Chin Minh City, Vietnam. We stayed in Ho Chi Minh City for only a night. The motorbike traffic rivaled that of Bangkok, and the Pho (noodle soup) and coffee was fantastic. We got up early to run our first morning, and joined the multitudes in the park playing badminton, doing tai chi, and even ballroom dancing (this was all at about 7am!). I always associate exercise with a degree of wealth—individuals have the time (and extra calories) to consider their health, rather than conserving every ounce, because one is hungry. We boarded a bus for the Vietnam Highlands at 10 am, and after ... read more

Uiiiii long time no seen/write.

Day 11 On day 11 we caught another bus to Ho Chi Minh city. This involved crossing the border from Cambodia to Vietnam mid way of the six our trip. Ho Chi Minh city is more built up then Phnom Penh and there are lots more motorbikes. Our accomodation there was very nice and we will most likely stay there again when we return to Ho Chi Minh on our way back to Melbourne. Day 12 We spent Day 12 booking and planning the next few days in Da Lat. We went to the markets during the day and at night. After dinner as a group, we split up into two groups. Half of us chose to go bowling and the others went to the night markets for more shopping. Bowling was great fun and there ... read more

I decided to be a biker and hire Haun an Easy Rider to take me around the Central Highlands for 3 days, showing me local customs and staying with the locals. After a night traveling to Dalat on a sleeper, Huan, picked me up from the bus station and took me back to his family's house where I met his mum, 75 year old father, his new born nephew, his sister and a cute 10 month nephew. I showered and his lovely mum cooked me breakfast before we headed off for my 3 day trip. The Central Highlands were beautiful, mountainous with brilliant views. Haun, showed me local farms, towns, tribal people and one of the highlights was coming across two tribal teenagers, doing karaoke in the middle of the day and joining in with them....very ... read more

So off on Friday on the coach to Da lat which took over 8 hours. Once arriving in Da lat we had been told it was a beautiful by everyone. But when you arrive quite late in the evening it did not feel beautiful at all - it felt like Ho Chi Minh but a smaller version with less traffic! The only first saving grace was the hotel we booked into was great and the hotel owners were fantastic. So off we go exploring with the girls to try to find what is the easiest and cheapest way to see the waterfalls as this is what Da lat is famous for and also some grub as we were hungry. Anyway after finding some grub which to be honest was our worst in Vietnam I was even ... read more

I stupidly read about the road to Dalat before we set off. Luckily it didn't rain on the way and it wasn't half as bad as I thought it would be, although I did spend most of it with my eyes closed and Paul was glad I did as we got pretty high and close to some cliff edges, the driver was a mentalist and it was dark. Dalat is 1500 meters above sea level in the central highlands and is so French you might think you are in the alps. It was a welcome change from beach or busy city, a biggish town surrounded by the most lush countryside and the views were spectacular! We'd booked in at Villa Pinkhouse and had already read about Mr Rots legendary secret tour, we booked on - a ... read more

Expectation is a fickle friend. He often disappoints you, but sometimes he happily surprises you. On the long run however I am not sure I would like him as a friend. Let me explain. Expectation, more often than not, is the emotion that decides whether or not I like or dislike a country. Or to put it correctly it is because a territory doesn't live up to its expectation that it falls out of grace with me. Those expectations are often fueled by what others tell me about their experiences in a country. Now, I am not that naive that I believe whatever people tell me about a place. I know that such experiences are highly individual. But be that as it may, if enough people tell you a country is great, or perhaps not so ... read more

I take a 7am bus out of Saigon & head for Dalat, a town up in the central highlands I'd heard good things about. I'm the only westerner on the bus but I don't mind, the bus boy speaks a little English and hands me a bottle of water and a refresher towel as I board. Now this is service I'm not used to! What a refreshing change from the crowded stuffy buses, packed with motorbikes & refridgerators, people sat on the floor etc. This is a new coach, air con fully working and the staff even have a uniform! I booked my open tour bus ticket yesterday which basically means I can travel South to North from Saigon to Hanoi, stopping at all the main cities on the way for the bargain price of £30. ... read more
