Na zaciatku ... read more

We barely made the 730 bus to Dalat. It took forever to work our way out through Saigon's suburbs, but eventually we were cruising through the countryside on our way to the hills. The bus stopped twice during the journey. The first stop was at a nice little gas station/minimarket where I grabbed some snacks before we moved on. The second stop was at the nicest rest area I've seen in Asia. It was up in the hills a ways, and the wonderful building matched the scenic location. Unfortunately the food was crap and we were lucky not to get food poisoning from the luke-warm pork. As we continued to climb into the hills, the scenery kept improving until we were driving through a pine forest and we could have easily been in the US. We ... read more

After another breakfast feast we hired an "easy driver" named "Happy" to drive us around in his van and take us to some sites. His cost was $30. Our first stop was the Vietnamses Linh Phuoc Pagoda. It was an IMPRESSIVE masterpiece in mosaics. The walls and pillars area all done in ceramic and glass mosaics and there were 3-d mosaic dragons all over. I get such a great feeling inside when I am surrounded by such art. It both inspires me and makes me smile from ear to ear. I am sure to have a bunch of photos to bore you all with when we get back to you know where ;) We then visited the Thien Vuong Chinese Pagoda. It had 3 huge sandalwood statues in it. Behind this pagoda and up on the ... read more

Having spent four days in Vietnam, meeting up with other teachers from our program in Saigon, we were nicely settling into life in Vietnam. We made our way north on another cramped bus that didn't fit anyone's legs, except maybe all the Asian's. We landed in Da Lat, a town set high up in the mountains of Vietnam, a sort of artist community/college town and a great base for adventure trips. Having spent too many hours either eating icecream, riding in tiny tiny buses, or at street vendors, I was desparate for some physical activity. So the first chance I got I signed up for a mountain biking trip. It was listed as a class 5 on a scale of difficulty, and too be honest I thought it might be a little easy for me. I ... read more

Dalat is in the central highlands of Vietnam, this is a densely forested mountainous region in the south west of the country. Another slow but spectacular scenic bus journey brought us here from Mui Ne, we would not recommend the Hanh Cafe open bus company as they take forever to get around, loads of faffing and not much driving. Dalat doesn't see half as many tourists as Saigon and for this it has a totally different atmosphere, much more local. We were only here two nights so we took a city tour which was a bit naff really but we got to see some of the local scenery such as lakes, waterfalls (for which the area is famous), and we took a cable car ride over the hills. Not much else to add, just check out ... read more

Had an amazing breakfast this morning. They have a big table set up in the kitchen with plates of pineapple spears, watermelon, dragonfruit wedges, bananas and papayas. Also baguettes, cheese, individual yoghurts, fresh juice, coffee or tea, jam and butter. To go with all this they will cook you eggs or omelletes too. This is all included in our $20 a night rate. After our feast we walked to the lake that the city is built around and rented 2 swan shaped paddle boats for 1 hour. Lunch was in a pub type place where I had grilled rabbit and James had crocodile cooked in beer. The rabbit was good and the crocodile was like chicken with lots of little bones - quite tastey. It was weird dining there as at one time there must have ... read more

Took our first open tour bus this AM to Da Lat. On the 6 hour trip we drove through agricultural areas where oxen were pulling carts and produce was being grown. Open Tour buses are much more comfortable that the local buses but at the same time alot more expensive - $27 for us all as compared to $8 on the local bus. Our bus driver was horn crazy too and these horns are loud! We were switched to another bus later on and the new driver did not use his horn near as much - thank goodness. The ride across the coastal flatlands changed and we began the trip up into the mountains on narrow curvy roads. I coped quite well until about the last 50 kms at which point naseau set in so I ... read more

Dalat is the most visually stunning city I have been to since I began travelling. 1500 meters above sea level, with archatecture heavily influenced by the french, it felt more like a european ski resort town than an old asian city. The buildings were slim, tall, and stood out due to their array of bright solid colors. There was a large well kept lake in the middle of the town, and the geography of the city was very hilly. I arrived in Dalat just as the sun was setting, which really helped accentuate it's magnificence. Soon after the sun set, and after I had checked into a hotel (with a Korean guy who had just come to Vietnam from Austrailia), we went out into the streets for a stroll. It was cold outside, and not just ... read more

well yesterday we spent a whole day wasted on the bus winding up and down the biggest mountains and going 25km/h. Only a 300 km journey that took us 7 hours...ohh it was sooo much fun!..our ipods ran out of battery after being fully charged thats how fun it was!! So dalat is up in the mountains and its cold again...uniforms are back!. We did our first bit of 'backpacking' as we decided to walk to our hotel instead of getting a taxi despite a million eager offers..our bags are definately getting heavier!! so found our hotel then off to explore the city and meet up with our uni friend dave and his girlfriend Kristy...it was so exciting to see someone from home!! Had a few drinks in the dodgiest place dim lighting, corny music and ... read more

Chau! I tell you what, this alliteration thing for the titles is getting harder, wish I hadn't started it. I don't think I'll ever make a headline writer! It feels like a month since I last wrote, I'm completely losing track of days since every day is like a Saturday. It's such a hard life! We left Saigon last Monday and headed north overnight to Nha Trang which is one of Vietnam's beach resort areas. Brendan was doing his three day scuba diving course so I was glad to have Eddie along to keep me company. On the first day we got there I headed to the local market to buy some running gear. I decided to take it up again to help keep me motivated with the no smoking and also because my intake of ... read more
