A big day at the village school today - the kids are actually going.
They have been back at school after a few months holiday for about 10
days and now the school is closed for two days to allow an inter-school
sports competition to take place. To start of the day everyone has to
parade around the village in costume. This means that all of the young
kids are done up to the nines and caked in make-up like a children's
beauty pageant in America. The boys are wearing quite a bit of make-up
as well. Later there will be a football tournament, volleyball and
takraw between the schools from six local villages. There is obviously
considered no need for the kids to learn to read, write and do maths
here when you are competent at walking up and down banging a drum !!
We
bike out to the farm to check on the rice which is doing OK and should
be ready for cutting in about another week. Whilst we are there we do a
bit of 'shopping' from various trees around the place.
This appears
to be a good season for wild flowers and looking around there are some
beautiful flowers to be found at the moment. We take some water
lillies/orchids back to the house to try them in water but dont have
much faith in their lasting.
It has been cloudy most of the day so late afternoon I go back to the farm to clear some more grass from around the palms.
Before
Max left she gave Jai some asparagas seed so this evening we plant that
out along with some cabbage seed which is always our best grower.
