That time of year has come around again when we feel the need to escape the British winter weather.
This time we were lucky enough to be able to catch up with Sharon , Scott, Kyla and Jake. They were on a two week vacation for the Christmas period.
It was a bit of a late decision to come away so we were delighted that our favourite guesthouse on Ko Lanta had a vacant room for us. Even better it was our favourite room overlooking the tropical garden.
Sharon and Scott were staying a couple of minutes walk away. Both places just a few steps away from the beach.
After a long 30 hour journey we arrived on the island and we're met with a warm welcome. The owners know roughly what time we should arrive and we're there to greet us with open arms. The maids rushed to carry our bags to our room. It felt just like coming home.
After a quick freshen up I sent message to Sharon and we met up at Somewhere Else restaurant on the beach for a sunset beer. How quickly we'd fallen back into the old routine!
Long Beach
on Ko Lanta is well known for it's amazing sunsets. Around 6.15pm the sun turns into a huge orange ball and sinks into the sea before turning the sky fiery red.
At this time the beach is lined with people eagerly awaiting the event with cameras poised.
We spent the next few days walking to the rocky end of the beach where there's long stretches of empty soft white sand.
Sharon was taking Kyla off on boat trips to get her Paddie diving certificate but in-between we'd meet up on the beach in front of Somewhere Else. Unfortunately Jake had injured his leg badly just before coming away and wasn't able to go in the sea. Despite the heat he and Stan enjoyed playing table tennis and darts in the restaurant. And the odd game of ' gentle' football on the sand.
Evenings were mostly spent dining at either Thaicat restaurant or Sun, Sea and Sand restaurant where there was a magnifit fire show each evening.
Rasta Santa visited the restaurant on Christmas eve giving out gifts to all the children.
Sharon and co came around to our guesthouse on Christmas morning for the traditional present opening.
Although it was a very modest affair due to the fact none of us wanted to carry large presents halfway across the world!
While Kyla was off diving Jake bought himself a fire stick and quickly mastered the art himself. ( With lights not fire I must add!)
All too soon it was time for them to leave for home, We had our last meal together before waving them goodbye.
New Year's Eve here was a big event. Restaurants on the beach were once again adorned with huge bunches of balloons, lights and tinsel. Extra tables and chairs were set out on the beach.
At midnight the sky was lit up with fireworks from all directions. We had met up with friends Tara and Michael and Tara's parents at the mini mart for drinks and all strolled back down to the beach in time for midnight.
A very enjoyable occasion.
