All good things come to an end. It was time for us to set off on our way back home.
Not before saying our last goodbyes to many of the people we'd become friends with over the last few weeks.
First stop was Krabi town on the mainland reached by mini van.
Travel is so easy here, a minivan picks you up at your hotel/ resort and gets you over to the mainland on a small car ferry and then drops you off at your chosen hotel/ guesthouse in Krabi. Door to door service, can't complain! They carry 12 people so the journey can be a bit long winded as they go round picking people up then dropping them off at various locations. It took us about two hours in all.
We planned a night here in Krabi to ease us gently out of laid back island life and into the crazy world of Bangkok. We needed to get our flight back home from there.
Krabi is a small town with a scenic river and a couple of temples. There's also a selection of nice restaurants and a night market, so plenty to keep us occupied for an
afternoon.
Once settled into our guesthouse, which was lovely, we visited both temples before showering and going off out to dinner in our favourite Italian restaurant there. ( We've been to Krabi a few times so know our way around and the best places to go).
Next morning we had a taxi arranged for 8.30am to take us to the airport and by 1pm we were at our hotel in Bangkok.
We had the rest of that day plus two more before our flight home.
On the second day there we went in search of the Golden Mount, a man made mountain with a temple on the top that gives great views over Bangkok.
We had been there a few years ago and had made it on foot by following a map in the Lonely Planet Guide book.
We no longer travel with Lonely Planet guides but use our smart phone instead. This proved to be a mistake.
We brought up the map, on Google maps, of the route from our hotel to the mount but once we set off it was practically impossible to see as the sun was so bright. Traffic was
so noisy that we couldn't hear spoken instructions either.
According to Google maps it should have taken 29 mins to walk to. We somehow managed to take well over an hour and in temperatures of over 34 degrees C we were melting.
Not to be defeated we climbed the hundreds of steps to the top and melted even more. Nice!!
Eventually three hours later, and a lot of wrong turnings, we arrived back at the hotel and went for a much needed dip in the hotel pool.
At 11pm that night we got into a taxi for Bangkok airport.
We arrived 3.5 hours before take off so thought we had loads of time.
Wrong!!
The queue for the Emirates desks was already very long. I think all the world and his wife have decided to start travelling again. Our plane was a two deck jumbo plane that carried over 500 people and, apparently, it was going to be completely full. No wonder the queue was long!
Thankfully as we eventually got closer to the check in desks the queue split and anyone who'd already checked in online got fast tracked to bag drop. I
was surprised how many people hadn't checked in online, fortunately, we had. Now all we had to do was get through security.
That took another hour but at last we were at the boarding gate.
And that's it! Adventure over. Now for the job of unpacking and tackling a mountain of washing.
