This was never in my travelling programme when I planned to visit Tiger Temple in Kanchanaburi. The driver took us to this quiet place, surrounded by greens all over, very hilly, with broken walls of the ruins that stretches quite a distance as we drove silently into the Muang Sing Historical Park. We soon reached the main temple, it was awesome, brought me back where this place once must be a busy happening place back in the 1157-1207, Lopburi period, with Khmer architectural designs, that shows the power of Cambodian has actually marked their colonization to this western part of Thailand. This park was declared National Historical Park in 1987. The place was damped after the morning shower; weather was good, cooling, never expected rain in this part of the year. It was a pleasant day. ... read more

Finally left Bangkok and headed west to Kanchanaburi, the city (in)famous for its Death Railway, which was built by the Japanese using POW forced labour during WWII. Literally hundreds of thousands of European and Asian labourers perished under the utterly inhumane working conditions, all to realize ambitious Japanese plans to connect Thailand and Burma by rail through otherwise seemingly impenetrable mountainous terrain, as a new transportation link for their war supplies. The Death Railway of course bridges the equally (in)famous River Khwai, whose mention must certainly bring to many a mind images of the movie of the same name. It was especially poignant to read about the plights of the labourers, and to see for myself the exact location of their efforts, in what must have literally been a living hell. Kanchanaburi today of course is ... read more

Yes, from TV to reality. One evening in year 2005, after taking care of my mom's needs, I was watching the National Georgraphic programme with her before we have our dinner. As usual, National Georgraphic has been known to produce amazing documentaries in which my mom and I enjoyed most. She loves animals and it was a pleasure on my part to relate the stories to her. That evening, it was about the Tiger Temple in Kanchanaburi, Thailand. What amazes me was the fact, the elder monk, who suffered cancer had to find a secluded place far away from the exotic city he came from, a place where he could find peace to heal his illness. I felt sad for his health but I felt great with happy tears when he took care of a tiger ... read more

I woke up at 6:15am. I really hate getting up early and I count it as one of the best parts of my traveling days that I don't have to get out of bed until I want to. Though in the effort of living life to the fullest I try to average a 9am wake up call. So 6:15 am is quite early for me. At 6:30 a hostel employee knocked on the door and told me that they are waiting for me downstairs. I was almost ready anyway, so I grabbed my bag and hat and rushed down the stairs only to be told that I had to wait until 7am. They only sent someone to make sure I was ready. Since they are probably used to dealing with drunken backpackers I don't hold the ... read more

Day 4 and 5 So much seems to have happened so I thought I would run these two days together. We had an early start yesterday morning…I have already forgotten which day it is. We met again as a group and met the new person Tracey for the first time and I also found out that I would be rooming with her. She appears to be very nice and does not snore so that is a bonus. The first adventure for the day was a trip down the river in a long boat to explore the scenes behind the city. We were all expected to don life jackets making the trip a little uncomfortable. It was interesting to discover that some of the streets in Bangkok have houses with backyards sitting on the water. The water ... read more

Here we are for another fun week-end outside Bangkok. I would first like to thank Shane for giving us the idea in the first place. This is the blog that bring us here . I have to admit, Shane pictures are way more impressive than mine! We spent two days and a night just outside of Kanchanaburi, staying at Elephants World. Julia decided to join us last minute for this serious session of fun. The week-end ended between having fun with the elephants, learning about them...and relaxing in the middle of nowhere. First step, we took a taxi to Tonburi bus station just outside Bangkok. There we boarded a bus for the two hours ride to Kanchanaburi where the people of Elephants World we waiting for us. Most people will come to Elephants World for the ... read more

as written in previous blog, 120,000 people died constructing the railway of Death of whom approx 5000 Dutchies (of whom most died during construction of bridge) ... 12,000 english and approx 75-80,000 chinese ... most deaths were related to hunger and diseases ... with SO many chinese souls departing their physical bodies on and near this spot I'm surprised it has taken them so long to build a chinese temple next to the bridge ... m not sure when they started construction however as they're only now nearing completion it must have taken at least a few decades to get a proper place of worship ... My last official temple visit was a brutal one going there ... on a bycicle up a mountain in 45C ... i did get on mi way early (round 7ish) ... read more
