Okay, how do I describe my 3 days at the "Rainbow Gathering"?? First I guess I better explain what this whole rainbow culture is all about. From my understanding, it is an international community of people (of the free-spirit variety) that have common thoughts on peace and spirituality. Since first arriving in Thailand I've been hearing about this international gathering, here in Thailand from many other travellers and more or less just kind of shrugged it off as something I wasn't interested in. But then when in Ranong doing my VISA run, I didn't realize how close I was to this gathering and 2 people at the guest house I was at were on their way and invited me to come along. As I had no pressing plans, I decided it wouldn't hurt to check it ... read more

A standard tourist visa issued apon arrival in Thailand is only for 30 days and there are 2 ways of extending this; either apply for an extention in Bangkok that could take several days (or so I'm told), or leave the country and come back again to get a renewed 30 day visa. The second option is a very popular choice and is the option I chose. I still had plenty of time before my visa expired but I was heading down south anyway and I wouldnt get the opportunity to leave at a border for a while, so I bought a bus ticket down to the border where you can leave Thailand and visit Burma before re-entering with 30 days extra stay. While waiting for the bus I got chatting to a bloke heading the ... read more

Delarmi and I had the worst day so far on our travels….. We had to leave Thailand as our visa expired... now we planned to leave the day before, but the taxi didn’t pick us up... so we scheduled for the next day, cutting it fine with our visa. Anywhoo anything that could have gone wrong did.... company messed us about, missed the main bus in the small shanty town, we paid way over the odds to get us to the border... WAY OVER... but as we had 2hrs to get out... we had no choice... so we thought! When we do finally get there we get drenched. The bloody sea flipped upside down and launched down on us. The random thing is that we were in a poxy tail boat... no roof or cover ... read more

NOTE: This blog I wrote is from March 2006. The information may not be accurate! It is YOUR responsibility to get the most up-to-date information. I cannot and will not be responsible for your mistakes. This blog is likely outdated and remains on this site to give you an insight into my experience. Many of you have visited my blog regarding the visa run from Ranong, Thailand to Victoria Point, Burma (Myranmar). I know its not the most detailed, but it will give you some insight into what you should expect. Email me if you have questions or concernes, or I have said something that differs from your experience. ... read more

leaving bangkok was the easiest goodbye, as after a week in the place viewing temple after temple, being hassled by every tuk tuk driver that you caught eyes with (and more that you didnt) and numerous trips to the quacks it was a relief to be squeezed into a mini bus and back on the road. here in Thailand nothing is ever as it seems. the common description for a small, insignificant lie being a white lie, the thais have taken the white lie to a different level, providing the westerner with half truth/false information is a highly respected past time, and the need to blag is of a much higher standard than that displayed on pitsea market. in the western world the prices are set, the roads contain signs and traffic lights that represent some ... read more

After all the sun and beer and food and laughter of last night, this morning was a relatively slow-moving thing. Yesterday started off easily enough... We checked into our "resort" (read: bomb shelter) in Ranong. A pit. Really. This, however, cannot be the fault of Ray & Diane as they had never taken a group to this place before so ours was the trial run... Needless to say, Di was looking for other places by the time with left! Still, after so many days at sea with mediocre on-board showers, it was lovely to get to stand in a hot shower and feel TRULY clean. I forgot how great that was... We spent the day lazing, mostly. I went to lunch with most of the crew, and then afterwards relaxed with some of the guys with ... read more

So right now we're in Burma, although the bulk of this blog is about Ranong, our last Thailand stop for a few days. We had our overnight sail (which I thought was so fun b/c of the constant movement) Katie, Warren, & I had the first shift from 10pm-12am. Then we had to make a relatively long pit stop in Ranong before leaving Thailand to get into Burma and get our passports all sorted out, etc. THAT was an interesting experience. First off, you can't dingy into Ranong yourself. The only way to get to shore is to hail a longtail boat and pay for a sort of water taxi (which looked to me to be no more dangerous than riding in a European cab). We could only manage to get one longtail to hold all ... read more
