"Little" Ko Chang, February 7th, 2008 From: "The Alternate Side", Seinfeld - Season 3 Agent: I’m sorry, we have no mid-size available at the moment. Jerry: I don’t understand, I made a reservation, do you have my reservation? Agent: Yes, we do, unfortunately we ran out of cars. Jerry: But the reservation keeps the car here. That’s why you have the reservation. Agent: I know why we have reservations. Jerry: I don’t think you do. If you did, I’d have a car. See, you know how to take the reservation, you just don’t know how to *hold* the reservation and that’s really the most important part of the reservation, the holding. Anybody can just take them. A word about "reservations" in Thailand... Reservations aren't the equivalent to what you might expect in, say...anywhere else in the ... read more

Ranong: February 7th, 2008 Anatomy of a visa run Despite the inconvenience of having to get yourself over Thailand's border long enough to get your passport stamped, the "visa run" is a mercifully painless and relatively quick process. After all, it's pretty much the only "tourist" industry happening in Ranong, so at least its geared towards getting you from point A to B, and priced accordingly. For the record, (and for those who are reading this blog after finding it in a "thailand visa run" Google search), we went with Ranong because we were in the south (Ko Phi Phi, Krabi), and didn't want to take the train down to Malaysia. We had been looking into crossing into Cambodia, but scrapped the plan after realizing that we'd have to spend two and a half weeks in ... read more

The time finally came for me to have to go into Burma. Although I am not able to get to Ban Dada and the emails are that “they are having problems…” I don’t know what this means but the last volunteers I was in contact with couldn’t get there at all. Anyway, my 60 day visa finishes on the 5th of November, so I got to be one of the hundreds of travelers to make the Ranong “passport run.” Ranong itself is a bustling port town and I love the towns on the water. It reminded me initially of Juwei in Taiwan. The crowded houses hung out over the water and life went on as usual. I took far too many artsy shots of the longboats, but then…I like them a whole lot. “nung, song, sam…..tee ... read more

Day 272, 27th February Ta Hong - Chumphon - Isthmus of Kra - Khao Fachi We awoke at sunrise to a breakfast our Thai hosts had made us. The kids were vying for attention, so I showed them the “Severed-Thumb” trick which both freaked them out and amazed them. After eating, we said thanks to Jatupon, took some pics, promised to send them from home, and left at eight. Ranong was well within our capabilities today, but it was not to be. Thirty miles south near Chumphon the road headed west across The Isthmus of Kra to the west side of Thailand. I love that name, The Isthmus of Kra. It’s kinda magical and wouldn’t be out of place in a Tolkein book. “Thraleodor the Brave raced over The Isthmus of Kra on Kraithcholde, his Grey ... read more

Thailand “Land of Smiles” returns. After leaving Khao Sok we spent the rest of the day heading to Ranong - this time on a local bus where our belongings were safe! The main reason for going was a ‘visa run’ to Myanmar as our 30 day tourist visa was soon to run out. The people we met in Ranong were totally friendly and we did a visa run with Pon’s Place who were amazing and really kind and helpful. The trip itself was about ½ hour in a longtail boat across the bay to Myanmar and back. It was a totally comical situation, loads of people doing the same. So there we were, on a little longtail boat crossing into Myanmar huddled under an umbrella to shield us from the sea spray! We got to the ... read more

Being a Canadian in Thailand we are granted a 30 day visa free period. When this 30 days ends, you can hop over the border at any of the neighboring countries and re-enter, and be given another 30 day stamp in your passport. There are restrictions though, and you can only stay a maximum of 90 days in a 180 day period. Well, our 2nd round of 30 days was coming to and end and we needed to renew our stamps before our friends Kim and Andrew arrived from home. Tourist offices are everywhere in Thailand, offering any combination of tickets to get you where you want to go. Visa runs are no exception, and from Phuket the popular place to go is into Burma. This requires a painfully long day of traveling. The bus picked ... read more

We biked the 100 km to the gathering site at Ao Kohie beach. In typical rainbow tradition the last 1 km was the most challenging. We waited for low tide and one at a time made our way across the rocky beach. And when we came to the end, friends who were expecting us came running to help the rest of the way. Good to be home!! We have a pineapple on the beach and then go exploring. Marcos had had a couple of days to set up the Chai shop and already his reputation for good chai had spread around the gathering. We have yet to find the spot for Popcorner. Main circle that night is nice and tight. Maybe 120 people. Next day we returned to Ranong to pick up the popcorn and the ... read more
