Living on Long beach in Ko Lanta, now we have found a spot that feels like home! It would be all too easy to lose track of time and just stay here. A Little more to do than Ko Lipe but Smaller than Langkawi (Malaysia) and it has the most laid back atmosphere without being too boring. We are staying at a place called The Lanta Pearl resort and it's the nicest room we have had excluding the 4 star in Panang. It's run by a local family that really cares about it's guests and make you feel at home (almost too at home). We have met more travelers from all over and made more friends. I am still having a few issues uploading pictures but will write a longer blog and update the pics when ... read more

We (reluctantly) left Koh Chang to head to Bangkok to meet up with Laura, Nick and Alexes. Poor Alexes had been stranded in Shanghai for a week thanks to the epic snowfall that devastated much of China. She had been planning on returning to Wuhan before meeting us in Bangkok, but she could get an international flight before she could get a domestic flight. So, she was anxiously awaiting our arrival. It was great to see her and start to share all of our stories. Alexes, Katie and I had a pool going on when Laura and Nick would show up. Alexes and Katie each thought that Laura would show up first, but on different days. I took the long shot and put my 20 baht (60 cents) on Nick. They ended up getting to the ... read more

Took tuktuk up the hill to the butterfly sanctuary today. Saw beautiful butterflies and chrysalis; took a tonne of photos. Most of the butterflies were behaving and to be honest showing off, fluttering and posing long enough for us to get pictures. Ree is now pretty much an expert with his camera and is putting my quick shots to shame! Across the road from the butterflies was an elephant camp. We climbed up a bamboo tower and precariously onto the elephant. With a guide on board we set off on an hours elephant trek into the jungle around Ko Lanta. It was very hot and the elephant plodded along, occasionally stopping for food or for nature to take its course! Afterwards we fed her bananas for a job well done and she was left to rest ... read more

Sometimes you end up in a certain situation, in a certain place, at a certain point in time and wonder how did you get there? This is one of those times. It's late. Or early. It depends on your perspective. Either way, I'm tired, and a little drunk. And I'd like to go to bed. But i won't for a little while. There is a more pressing matter at hand. There's the drunken Thai guy shouting. There's a drunken Thai guy shouting at me. There's a drunken Thai guy with a knife in his hand. And again, i think to myself, how did i end up here? The situation seems incongruent with the island. Ko Lanta is not a crazy sort of a place. It's popular with families and Scandinavians (and how laidback are they - ... read more

Ko Lanta - Local brew = Happy Shakes. We thought we'd give Ko Lanta a whole blog of its own because all 9 of us absolutely loved the place and wished we'd spent at least a week there instead of just 3 days. We got a boat here from Phi Phi then all piled into a pick up truck at the ferry port in Ko Lanta and headed the 15km up the coast to Long Beach. We had been recommended a couple of places to stay and ended up in 'Paradise Bungalows' which was right on the beach. It was a bit of a squeeze as they only had 2 rooms for 9 of us so it was 4 in one room and 5 in the other! (One for the young un's and one for the ... read more

After an excruciating 18 hour push, we arrived to our second island destination, Koh Lanta. Not a whole lot of activity on the island. We found a smart little bungalow and intended on relaxing--something we may be becoming a little too comfortable doing. Ha. Our days were filled with motorbike rides along the coast. Aaron is learning day by day how to drive a manual. It is about $3 cheaper than automatic, AND uses less gass, so why not? We took some great rides, basically circumventing around the island. If I went over about 20, Ely respectfully gave me a knee to the back. In the southwest corner of the island, we found a nearly deserted rocky little beach. Quite beautiful. Somehow, a little restaurant was perched up against the cliff. Crazy. Renter's insurance must be ... read more

The quick version of what I did in Cambodia, because writing it up has been holding up my blog updates for a month now!! I flew to Siem Reap from Pakse on Christmas Eve, employed a moto driver to take me to the temples for the next 3 days, and then went to Angkor Wat for Christmas morning sunrise. Me and a whole lot of other people, all stumbling about in the dark trying to get the most photogenic position. The temples of Angkor are truly amazing, the thing that I didn't really grasp before I went was how widespread and how many of them there are, they represent a city that was the size of Manhattan, although due to tyhe fact that there is no on site information, a lot of the time you don't ... read more

Staring into the Andaman Sea whilst enjoying a meal with the water lapping below your feet is a glorious way to dine! Such is the beauty of the beach at Koh Lanta Yai. We made our way here after an interesting couple of bus (read: dilapidated mini-van) trips from Ao Nang. Our driver from Ao Nang to Krabi seemed to be discovering as he went along where he needed to pick up other passengers, via his mobile phone as he was driving. This man really had to be seen to be believed, for he had one specific feature which simply MUST be described. I've been told that cats have whiskers that grow to a length which enables them to detect which gaps they can slide through. I can only assume that the thick, black and astonishingly ... read more

So, when I last left you, we had completed a massive trek from Koh Phangan to Phang Nga. Phang Nga is a really small town, with not much to do, most people just use it as a jump-off point for Phang Nga Bay, which is a huge bay with islands and rock formations scattered throughout. We checked into our hotel, the Phang Nga Inn, which was lovely and the owner was a really sweet lady who was always checking in on us. Ashley had some cousins who were staying at a resort nearby, so she left the next morning to spend the day with them, while I left to do a boat tour of Ao Phang Nga Bay, which is kindof like Thailand's equivalent of Halong Bay, in Vietnam. The main feature of Ao Phang Nga ... read more
