Julia Bathing with Elephants at the Anantara Resort at the Golden triangle. On our last day in Northern Thailand, following a visit to the fantastic Opium Museum (more on another blog) we got back to the hotel to what turned out to be the highlight of the whole holiday for Julia. We took a buggie down to the river and then as the elephants arrived, Julia asked if She could join in with the bathing. At that time only 5-6 elephants were in the river, but after only a few minutes more than 20 elephants were in the river at the same time as Julia. A magnificent sight them all enjoying themselves and the younger ones squirting Juia with Water. A marvellous 45 minutes.... read more

On our last day in Northern Thailand and still uncertain wheter we had flights back or not, we decided to have an early breakfast and join Meana the baby (4yr old) elepehant on the breakfast terrace. We had some lovely photos to go with the previous days and the we visited the Elepha sanctary where we talked to the lady who said She was the "Vet" and saw a number of elephants in good condition (including one who was pregnant) They eat loads!. We then went through some of the beutiful gardens and flowers (going past a water buffalo in mud) and then we visited the Opium museum opposite the hotel. Provided by the Queen Mum Projects, it was an eye opening insight into the History of Opium, its effects on people and also the area ... read more

Before I hop over the border to Laos tomorrow morning (well, not hop so much as take a ferry since the border is the river here), I am making a stop in the northernmost part of Thailand. Yesterday I was in Chiang Saen, which is close to the infamous opium-poppy growing region at the convergence of Thailand, Myanmar (Burma), and Laos known as the Golden Triangle. From Chiang Saen it was a pleasant little bike ride to Ban Sop Ruak where signs everywhere let you know that you have arrived at the Golden Triangle. Tour buses and minivans arrive from Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai to view it, but frankly it's not that interesting to see. It's more of a 'snap-a-couple-of-pictures-and-pedal-along-your-way' kinda place. What I did find interesting, however, was the Opium Museum in town. I ... read more

Thailand After Africa, we headed back to the UK for a few weeks so that we could go to Stu and Karen's wedding. We had a great day and are so pleased that we didn't miss it. It was also great to catch up with people again, even if it was a bit of a fleeting visit! A huge thanks to everyone for looking after us and putting us up now that we are homeless in the UK! Our next leg is South East Asia. Starting with Bangkok. This would be interesting as we have been here before. Would we be as excited about it as last time or would we be desperate for new challenges like Africa? Bangkok has changed a lot! Huge, shiny shopping centres full of uber-luxury goods and a super efficient sky ... read more

... read more

Well the day has been great so far. Left Chiang Rai by local bus (32 Bhat each) for Chiang Saen. Just 1 1/2 hours to get here - a very quick beer while we sorted out our accomodation - a little more expensive than we had expected at 600 B ($20), but the room is large with 2 king size beds. Gin, the owner has done nothing but try to get money out of us since we arrived and has a friend who can get us down to the boarder crossing and arrange our Visa'a for 1960 Bht - I don't think so! She is very disappoionted when she finds out we already have our Visa. We thought that Chiang Rai was quiet, this place has a main street that we will walk in 15 minutes ... read more

Not too much to really report. Just wanted to let you know I am alive. I am in Chiang Saen tonight. I stayed on the river in Tha Ton last night. I hired a motorbike for 5 days. I was getting very stir crazy in Chiang Mai and needed to escape. I love the time I am in the saddle twisting through the mountains, it feels like my soul is at rest and I am at peace with the world as I fly through it. It's the stoping and having to figure out what to do in the evenings solo that isn't much fun as I'm not really one for the nightlife, not really a problem in Chiang Saen as there is no nightlife to speak of. Nice people though, much less touristed and I'm not ... read more

* May. 10th, 2007 at 8:15 AM Chiang Saen, Thailand Today is a day of updating my Blog and staying touch with the ‘real world’. (As I write with a big grin…). I am fortunate in having found the cheapest Internet shop I have ever found anywhere and at 20 Baht an hour, I wonder how this young man can make a living out of this business. Having a couple of hours of editing and uploading photos, I shut down my computer and head back to my guesthouse where my bags are already packed as checkout is noon. After grabbing my things, I stroll back to the café taking a detour along a street where I had noticed another Chedi temple and took some photos before returning to the café where I was to meet ... read more
