This morning was a 7am start so that I had enough time for a TRX workout on the balcony of the hostel. I did get a few funny looks as I sweated it out in the glorious morning sun - it looked like it was going to be a beautiful day. With the prospect of being in transit to Laos for twenty two hours in what I was expecting to be a small cramped minivan, I thought it best to expend some energy. I grabbed a quick shower and was sat bag packed, towel drying in the sun and coffee in hand by 9am with a whole hour to go before my pickup. I sat basking in the glorious sunshine in the garden of Jai dii house wishing I could have had an extra day in ... read more

13th March We were up early to get breakfast before we set off towards Pak Beng. the boat was big enough for us all to spread out and relax. We were on it from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and i was glad we had enough to keep us entertained, we'd bought books, sudoku, ipods and cards, but it was still boring and most people slept for the whole day. Not much to say about the whole day, we arrived in Pak Beng which was a town with not much to do in it. For tea we both ate buffalo, Kim's was curried and mine BBQ'd. To relax we went to the only bar in town, which turned out to be more like a drug den, we didn't stay long after we'd been offered coke, met ... read more

David here... We arrived at Chiang Khong around 5 o'clock after a 7 hour bus journey. We were picked up last by the private van and had to squeeze into the front with the driver. Suzanne had had a terrible nights sleep as she has now developed a 'severe poorly travellers tummy' so spent a lot of the journey in some discomfort. We found one of the recommended guest houses easily enough, after turning one down when the owner tried to rip us off by changing the price at the last moment. Glad we did move on as the room at Tam Mi La, whilst more expensive at £13, was a little bit of luxury and we immediately felt at home. We only planned to stay in Chiang Khong, an unremarkable border town for 1 night ... read more

Re bonjour!

Saturday, 7th August Just a seven hour bus to the border today. Our hostel for the first time has a pool which we most obviously abused. I swear to God I saw Pete Townsend too. Turned out when he spoke that he was actually Pierre Villesend. It's okay I haven't told anyone. Today's gripe is with how noisy Asians eat. Sitting next to them is like being punched in the ear by a man made of garbage who squelches when he moves. I've been assaulted. It's a train wreck to look at as well, they don't open their mouths just for chewing but for speaking whilst chewing. Yuck. The whole situation is amplified when no-one else is eating, say when I'm having a quiet beer writing my diary. Sunday, 8th August We came to Chiang Khong ... read more

Monk had originally planned to stay a couple of nights in Chiang Rai before moving on to Chiang Mai. This would have broken up the bus journey into a 3-hour and and 5-hour stint. However, he decided that it might be better to get the journey done in one chunk and to leave Chiang Rai for a future, more leisurely stay. The public bus from Chiang Khong to Chiang Mai takes 7-8 hours and costs 220 baht. The other option is to take a mini-bus for 250 baht (£5) which does the journey in around 5 hours. Monk likes public buses, they can be much more interesting. However, for a saving of 3 hours at an extra cost of less than £1, Monk felt there was no contest. The mini-buses seem to be local hotel buses run, ... read more
