Well guys only stayed for 1 night in Chiang Rai, 1 night too long really, just a smaller version of Chiang Mai. Got on a bus and headed for Chaing Sean which is a little town located on the Mekong River. Very few people speak English and I learnt just how little I can actually speak Thai, but that’s half the fun. I managed to see my first sun rise over the Mekong but due to so much smoke from the fires in the area it was fairly high before you could see it. Hired a motor bike for the day and set out to see The Golden Triangle, which is only 9klm awayand at this point Myanmar, Laos and Thailand all meet together on the Mekong River. A very tourist orientated place with many souvernear ... read more

Well, am a bit behind on my travel diary as i've spent the last few days in wonderful laos, but more on that later. at the minute, we are talking northern thailand. after finishing my last entry in chiang mai, some of the group headed off to a massage at the local lady's "correction centre", or prison to you and me. didn't know what to expect really, whether it would be big bruising women who would pummel us to death or not. turned out to be really good fun in the end. we had to change into some hilarious looking gowns which were way too big, and the women proceeded to pummel us to death for the next hour. this included punching, joint stretching, artery blocking (i'm not joking) and being embalmed in tiger balm -- ... read more

The second day of our Intrepid tour's about waiting. Waiting for our bus, waiting for Ping to arrive. He's always late. It's Thai time, one of the Kiwis said. And that's when we started talking about Asia, and that things in these region are never on time (Singapore and Japan are the exemption, not the rule). My group mates were bored and I really can't blame them. We're all dying to get to Laos. But for me, I think, who just crashed and burned and trying to have my life back (after years of rushing from one news coverage to another, and later, after years of being confined in the desk) , waiting is about taking things slowly, learning to let go. Chill Prime!, I told myself. In Singapore, everything's has to be scheduled. In ... read more

Well two days and 1000 kms of bus and train later, and I'm sitting here in Chiang Khong on the Mekong River right up in the Golden Triangle. Laos is literally 100m away from our guesthouse (or however wide the river is) and we'll be heading there at 8:30 tomorrow morning. I found out about a place in Vang Vieng (about 100 or so k's north of Vientiane) that does WWOOFing, and I might look into doing that for a week or so! I've decided that the ONLY way to travel is to stay somewhere for more than just a few days (more than a week too, but you can only get 15 days in Laos, so I wanna see a bit more of it). The actual TRAVELLING part of travelling sucks! I've taken to lying ... read more
