Oui bon okay. Yay! Il faut vraiment que ... read more

We flew from Singapore to Bangkok on the 4th of November and a few hours later we picked up the night train to Chiang Mai in the north of Thailand. We headed up this way as Chiang Mai is becoming known as the cultural/bohemian centre of Thailand and also because we had booked ourselves onto a conference (The Effects of Globalisation on Minority Peoples in South East Asia). We thought it was going to be cooler in the North but it was still about 32 degrees (90) most days. We went on a study field trip for 4 days visiting the hill tribes and staying with local people. We split into different groups, Denise went with the group looking at local education and indigenous knowledge and I went with the group looking at arts and crafts ... read more

so we just finished up loy krathong festival last weekend and there were many a time i felt my life could have been in potential danger and that was only on thrusday. it got really crazy on saturday but i decided to stay in for that. on thrusday alone in the area where we were there probably about a firework going off every second; some right at your feet, some beside you, some in the air. it was pretty crazy and i just kept saying how crazy it was. i eventually got to light off some fireworks of my own though and after a little to drink i accidently lit on off on my hand. it only hurt for a second and then i forgot about it. on saturday from my placem i could hear about ... read more

Morning all, Yesterday was the day of the big Trek here in Chang Mai. Turned out it was just myself and Ruth going from our place, so the mini van picked us up first. Then it was off to pick up the other trekkers. 2 Indian ladies staying at the Imperial Hotel, a Canadian couple staying at the Plaza Hotel, a Japanese couple & American couple staying at the Sheraton Hotel. They had an average age of 50, and their hotels made our humble guest house look like a shanty town.......we were defo the poor relations on the trip! Underterred we pressed on, and an hour later we reached our first stop which was going to be the elephant trek. We got a young elephant who I have to give full credit to for managing to ... read more

All is well here in sunny Chang Mai. We spent yesterday and today just chilling by the pool in the guesthouse (called Nice Place 2 by the way). Last night was great. We set off with about 12 other bums from ou guesthouse to go and see Thai Boxing. It was on from 8pm until about midnight......ending up drinking a substantial amount of Chang Beer at the arena and having a super night. Afterwards a crowd of us heading on a Tuk Tuk to a nightclub called 'Bubble'.....very impressive I must say.....knocking back the White Russians so I was !! All aboard! Sawasdee krap, We left Bangkok last night at 10pm local time on the overnight train to Chang Mai and arrived here at noon. The train is legendary, you lot didn't build it up enuf! The bunks are great, and I had great fun swinging out of the ladder up to my bunk and other crazy stuff which I can't mention in a family email of this nature.......!! Anyway, I slept soundly for 7/8 hours so it's all good! Checked into a lovely little 'gaff' here, aircon and all for 8 euro a night for the room. The place has its own swimming pool so time to chill out after mad mad Bangkok! Accomodation = Nice Place 2 Guesthouse. Good budget place, great place to meet people. 400 Baht. We moved to a better place ... read more

Ahhhh Chiang Mai.

i just got back from an Akha village in Chiang Rai and here are some pictures. Maybe i should fill in some details a bit. Similar to the situation in Canada , hill tribe people have somewhat of a minority standing here in Canada for several reasons. Most are not traditionally from Thailand and immigrated here as early as 30 years ago, due to such things are world war 2 , the vietnam war etc. They came from Burma, Laos, China and Vietnam. And as many came so recently to Thailand they do not have thai citizenship which makes them illegal squatters on land and affords them no rights when the government does such things as making a national park out of their village. So some common misconceptions of these people are that they are opium ... read more
