We've been on the move. Had to force ourselves off the beach and brave the journey back to Bangkok, it only took us 20 hours this time and cost 200 Baht less, so that was nice! Decided, due to a change of plan, not to stay in Bangkok so we booked a train to Lopburi, waited the three hours for it to leave then enjoyed the relative comfort of a third class journey a little way North. Lopbori is a fairly small town that has some really interesting ruins from the 6th to 10th centuries AD, but the real reason we came was to give Anny her first sighting of some monkeys. This town has a troup of mischievous monkeys running amok, and after a little hunting we found the pesky buggers! They seemed to have ... read more

Monday November, 5th 2007 With the departure of Jan and nothing planned for the day, I have the feeling that my time off is really starting to day. The weather is quite nice : sunny and not too hot. I'm filling up my blog text to start the day. Then, I started to put things on the agenda (in the latin meaning of the word : the things that ought to be done) : laundry, tourist information, a bit of meditation, some Taijiquan practice, writing my blog, a good nap in the afternoon going to the Internet café, a hair cut... Well, quite a lot for a day at doing nothing. I feel happy of my first resting day though not everything is done. In particular, as my memory stick broke down, I was unable to ... read more

Saturday November, 3rd 2007 I'm leaving Bangkok for Nakhon Ratchasima. The train in second class is quite comfortable. I decide to stay at Doctor's guesthouse. The room is quite large. The bathroom is in need of cleaning and refreshing but I definitely like the quietness of the place. For those interested, there is not often an answer at the phone number mentioned in the lonely planet and the cell phone of the manager is 085-632.33.96 I spent the evening walking downtown with Jan, a German student met on the train. Sunday November, 4th 2007 This was a busy visiting day going around Nakhon Ratchasima. First the small temple of Prasat Phanomwan. Then, the archaeological site of Ban Prasat and finally Phimay with its huge banyan tree and its temple. ... read more

After 4 months at school we would have two months at home. For this entire period my family lived in Korat, Thailand. There was another missionary family in town. Their daughter Barbara and son Jim were close to my age, and also went to Dalat School. We hung around a lot. We played badminton with our Thai friend Sawat. We would also ride our bikes all over town. One favorite destination was the rice mill. Next to the mill was a hundred foot high pile of rice husks. We had fun climbing it and sliding down. I also enjoyed riding out to the Thai Army base, which was next to the Thai Air Force base. The Thai Army base had a race course. They let me ride race horses around the track, which was quite exciting. ... read more

My parents were assigned to Nakhon Ratchsima (Korat), Thailand for language training, which would last two years. While learning Thai, my Dad also taught English to the cadets who were learning to fly F-86 jets at the Korat Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) Base. My Dad had a knack for names and remembered all of his students; even years later when they became the top officers in the military, and one became governor of Bangkok (then the owner of the Rose Gardens, a popular tourist attraction an hour west of Bangkok). When Mom was pregnant with me, she needed a doctor who turned out to be Dr. Supoch, an army doctor from the local base. Dr. Supoch eventually rose in rank to become the Surgeon General and one of the King's doctors. When my parents retired ... read more
