Awake with the alarm at 05:00 and come round slowly with a cup of tea in bed. Whilst I check our documentation for the last time.
Leave Khamnadie about 06:00 as it is just starting to get light. As usual I drop Jai off with the bags at the bus station then head across to town to leave the bike and walk back. The big pink bus arrives just before 07:00 and we decide to take the long route on this one rather than wait for another bus to arrive at some time later. Passing through Roi Et, Maha Sarakham, Kosum Phisai we arrive in Khon Kaen just after 10:00.
Instead of taking a taxi out to the Laos Consulate we are going to try our luck on the local buses today. I believe that songthaew No 4 will pass by the consulate so we board just outside the bus station and keep fingers crossed. I know roughly where the Consulate is and watch for landmarks along the way and sure enough, about 15mins later we have driven the 8km or so north of town and I spot the Laos flag above the high walled compound. There is a large group of schoolgirls already waiting with their teacher who appear to be going across the border on holiday and they have to dealt with before me so we wait. To be fair by the time I have filled out the application form and handed over a photo and cash it is only about 15ins before I have a visa in my sticky hands and we are leaving. Walk back to Thanon Mithrapap and catch the first songthaew that passes, a NO 2 in this case, which we assume is heading towards the bus station. Buses cost us 40p instead of 4-5GBP for taxis so was a good move.
Finish off our travelling for the day with a tuk-tuk ride to the Roma Hotel and check-in for the night. Head right back out to get a few odds and ends to go with the food that we brought with us then eat in the room before stretching out for a rest.
I leave Jai sleeping and set out for aong walk to warm up for the exercise in Vientiane over the next few days. Fip flops weren't the best idea for walking and even though I bit them when they were new they have still come back to hurt me. I change a little more money at exactly the same rate as the beginning of November.
Go to eat at our usual noodle stall about 17:00 then go for a beer and a game of pool at No 1 Bar just around the corner. They have a couple of books I would like to take but I am not going to carry them around all week so settle for just the one in case I want to read at all this week.
Back to the room about 19:30 as we have another early morning start tomorrow.
