From Bangkok, we took a train to Kanchanaburi. This is where the bridge over River Kwai is located. Our train was interesting. It was a third class train - open air windows and definitely not exciting. The train ticket was only $3.50 each. The train was also an hour late. The train ride was about 3 hours. You did get to see a lot of the country side and a lot of stuff blew in on us.
We got off the train at the bridge of River Kwai stop. There is a car out there with a taxi sign on it. We go over to it and show them our hotel information, he tells us it will be 50 Bhat. (about $2). Ok. he takes the taxi sign off his car and loads everything in. I think it was his personal car. ;-). The hotel was great. It is right on the river and you can see the bridge from it. Our room is small but not tiny.
We got a local beer and sat by the river during sunset. Beautiful. we then walked to the Loft restaurant, not far. the restaurant is on the water and had beautiful

bridge over river Kwai from our hotel views. Shelly had green curry veggie dish and I had Sushi. It was great. The wine wasn't.
Back to the hotel (9:00) and we crashed. The next morning I slept thru the alarm and didn't even wake up to shelly shaking me. She thought I was dead. Finally she woke me. I guess I was tired. ;-) we had a great breakfast at the hotel, then we were picked up for our day trip.
We were in a van for about an hour before we got to Erwin Falls. We hiked the falls, 7 seperate ones. The last one wasn't supposed to have much water on it this time of the year (dry season) so I stopped at #6. Shelly of course had to go the whole way up. The tour included lunch and we had a local lunch of rice noodles and vegies (i had chicken in mine). It was good.
Then back to the van and another hour drive to the Hell's Pass museum. This is the death railroad museum. Hell's pass was one of the most famous cuts on the death railroad that was part of the Burma - Thailand railroad the Japaneese built

one of the waterfalls using prisoners of war. We hiked about 2 kilometers of the railway and thru the pass.
Then back to the van and down more of the death railway to a small town. This wasn't very interesting and then we got on a train but it was packed so we had to stand and couldn't see much. This lasted about 30 minutes, then we met the van again for our ride home.
Last night's dinner was at another water front restaurant. We both had green curry, but mine had chicken, Shelly's didn't. It was good. Total bill $18 and that included 2 large beers and a bottle of water. i can say the prices are low.
We've seen lots of Budist shrines and temples during the trip so far and lots of houses have little shrines out in front of their house. Even some businesses have the little shrines. They look like a little tiny temple on top of 1 or more pedalstals. Sometimes there are offerings on them beside the tiny temple.
We've also seen scooters with entire families riding on a single scooter. It's crazy.
We're having a blast and miss everyone.
