2 Jan 2 Million Bats - Wildlife and Bird Watching at Khao Yai National Park I caught the Skytrain to BTS Mo Chit station and then another exciting motorcyle taxi ride with my backpack on and another large bag on my lap hanging on with one hand as the driver went full speed around the corner 3 km to the Mo Chit Bus station for 40 baht. The bus station is huge and all the signs are in Thai but everyone was helpful and I found a numbered window where I could buy a ticket for 144 baht to get me to Pak Chong. The trip took 2.5 hours and I got off in the main street - I then asked two guys which baht truck to catch to the Greenleaf Guesthouse - one of them ... read more

Payphones in Thailand are incredibly difficult to operate. Once you get your coins in, you have only a few seconds in which you must dial the phone number before it times out. Basically, if you are reading the guesthouse phone number from a page in the guide book you will not enter it in time. So began our trip to the largest and most famous national park in Thailand. After about 20 tries I finally managed to enter the number in time and was speaking to the guides at the Green Leaf Guest House and safari tours. We booked a room and a spot on the tour for the next couple of days and were on our way. The rest was easy. We left Ayuthaya by train, our first experience with the Thai trains. While it ... read more

When I was introduced to my personal guide for the next day's tour in the lodge the night before I thought he seemed a bit young! He wasn't much over 5 foot, had shoulder length hair and spent much of the evening playing computer games. His name was Anon (short for Anonymous I assumed). We entered the Khao Yai National Park at 8 the next morning - just me Anon and the driver because there are so few tourists about at the moment. I was interested to see how good the two Thais would be at spotting wildlife. The most important thing one expects from a guide is that he sees wildlife that you simply wouldn't have known was there on your own. Within minutes he had pointed out elephant dung. Come on Anon, we've ... read more

Ayutthaya to Pak Chong/Khao Yai National ParkJason & Kirstyn O Took another local train...this time with a lovely two hour delay at a small village while we waited for the oncoming train to come through. Not happy to sit in the heat but very happy that we didn't have to meet that train further down on the single track! Stayed at a great little Guest House in Pak Chong called Wildlife Safari which is run by a local family. Decided to take a tour into the National Park as we were not quite sure what to expect and we had read that you can get lost easily. Also the fact that there are wild elephants and supposedly tigers had some part of our decision process. The tour we did was for one and a half days ... read more

An interesting few days from Loas to Bangkok where we decided to go via Khao Yai National park in the north East of Thailand. Most of this time was spent travelling but as its not a major tourist route (most people go from Bangkok to Khao Yai rather than Loas) so we decided to negotiate local buses and trains. These are no worse than the tourist buses and much less expensive, we covered about a 1/3 of Thailand for under two pounds! Travelling from Nongkhai to Pak Chong to be precise, this gave us an opportunity to see another side to Thailand, experiencing areas where there were no other white people or tourist shops/informations centres/travel agents or even people who spoke English. Despite this these places where incredibly western and American! We had an overnight stay ... read more

It's not every day an ex-poacher demonstrates animal trapping techniques used to catch endangered species, but we were lucky enough to meet Kuman, a former poacher who now works with the WildAid Community Outreach Team near Khao Yai National Park. Kuman is the village leader of a very poor village on the edge of the park where at one point most of the adults in the village (including the women) were poachers. They took from the forest what they needed to survive in addition to what they could find to make money. As you walk through the village, old men still sit on the stoops of their metal corrugated shacks and make bamboo traps. A variety of mangy and unfriendly mongrel dogs bark ominous warnings. This is still a village where people have very little in ... read more
