Up with the alarm at 05:30 for a cuppa in the room whilst we finish off the packing. Check-out at 06:15 and no chance of a breakfast this morning so leave hotel and stop a remork. It is dark and cold and the remork driver decides to save fuel by turning his lights off when we get to the main road. At least leaving early we are ahead of the traffic chaos that will arrive shortly.
The airport is being developed at the moment and is a bit of a mess. We find a couple of free chairs – that weren't many there at all – and wait for our check-in to open. About an hour later our flight appears on the screen and we are able to get rid of our suitcase and make our way through immigration and into the departure lounge which is in a similar mess. We are both hungry now and there doesn't seem to be much in the way of shops. I leave Jai and go walkabout managing to find a bacon and fried egg baguette that suits us fine albeit at extortionate airport prices !!
We board Air Asia FD609 at 08:40 and it
leaves on the dot of 09:05. We look out the window for a final goodbye and thank you to Cambodia for a nice time over the last week or so.
The flight is quite turbulent but we arrive at Don Muang, Bangkok, at 10:15. There are quite long queues at immigration so I chance going through the Thai passport desk with Jai and as usual have no problems walking almost straight through. Even so we find that our bag has still managed to beat us through the airport and is waiting on the carousel when we get there. Take a taxi to Mo Chit bus station to buy tickets on the bus to Phon Thong for tomorrow night then take another taxi into town and our hotel. We are offered a room on the second floor but told that it wont be ready for another hour or so so are offered another option on the fourth floor which I don't like as there are no lifts. We take the room that is ready, dump our stuff and go straight out to our usual noodle shop for lunch.
A quick stop at the 7/11 on our way back then a spell in
the room. I make a final check of Jai's visa application package then remember I have to make updated copies of our passports after our trip to Cambodia. Reception at the hotel wont help me even though there is a photocopier right next to them and they also say that they don't know where I can find a shop that will do the copies for me. Thanks a lot !!
As I walk along the small soi where we are staying I recall that there is a large Post Office not that far away and think that will be as good a place as any to try. They direct me, strangely enough, to a jewellers shop next door to them who are quite happy to help me out.
Getting back to the hotel I spend 1/2 hour on the internet. Mum seems to be doing quite well which is good news. Gloucs win at Zebre which is also good news. I update this blog with the first day of our holiday. It will take me a week or so after getting back to Khamnadie before I am completely up to date again I guess.
Grab a couple of coffees from the 7/11 and take them back to the room. Late afternoon I phone sister Pam for an update but it isnt a good connection and we have trouble hearing each other. Try again a few minutes later with the same result so give up for the time being.
About 16:00 we stroll along to the riverside park where we always spend some time in the evenings when in Bangkok. I try phoning sister Pam one more time but pretty much the same result.
We had intended eating a BBQ fish tonight but the street stalls where we always eat dont seem to have any at the moment. Settle for some BBQ chicken instead. Unfortunately my food tonight had to be washed down with Thai beer which is poor at best.
