The bus stops at Khorat for its usual 20mins toilet and snack break but the driver has been having a few problems and it is more than an hour before we are on the move again. Dont know what the problems were but the cure seemed to be hitting the engine with a hammer ?! Phoned friend Phill in England whilst we waited to ensure that he was still OK to meet us at the airport when we arrived on Friday night.
After a couple more stops for engine problems we finally arrive at Mo Chit bus station Bangkok about 06:00. Squash the four of us and baggage into a taxi and drive across town to Banglamphu and the New Siam 1 Guest House. We are too early for a room to be free so as soon as the restaurant opens we eat breakfast whilst we wait.
John wins the toss of a coin and gets the first room to become ready whilst we wait another 20mins till about 8:30 before we can settle into our room. Shower and stretch out on the bed tired after a sleepless night.
Go out approaching midday to eat at our usual noodle shop just
up the road. It seems to be very quiet everywhere and there arent many people about.
Last time we were here the exchange rate with the GBP was 1:49 but today that has dropped dramatically to 1:43 !!
Go for a short walk after eating then back to the room. It is not exceptionally hot today but is very sticky.
Jai phones a few friends to say goodbyes whilst I watch some world news on BBC and CNN. Jai actually manages to speak to her daughter and not only will she keep our SIMs from expiring in our absence but it sounds as though she might come to the airport tomorrow to see us off.
We ask Mr Noi our usual taxi driver to pick us up at 09:00 in the morning but he thinks that traffic may be particularly bad around then and that we should leave a little earlier so we bow to his wisdom.
I lie on the bed and watch an awful Nicholas Cage movie, 'Snake Eyes' but dont survive to the end heading out for a walk instead. I sit in the small park up the road for an hour people watching and gazing at the boats plying their trade
on the Chao Phraya. Make my last phone call to the UK before leaving as well. Sounds like we might be welcomed back to the UK by snow !! I walk back to guest house and sit outside for a while nursing a small beer.
Get back to room about 18:00 for a shower and change. We are both hungry so phone John and arrange to meet him and Erm at reception sooner than planned.
We walk to a riverside restaurant for food and a couple of beers. Could have done with a few more beers but the after effects would have made tomorrows travelling even more unpleasant. Walk along Khao San Road looping back to guest house. We say our goodbyes leaving John and Erm getting stuck into another beer and head back to the room.
