Where’s Waldo
See if you can find any birds in this picture. The white painted birds and the word “bird” on the sign do not count. This writing is taking place at the standard cafe at the Ambassador, looking out at the Bird Oasis. Funnily (not a real word), I don’t see a bird anywhere. Plenty of fish in the water, and squirrels in the top fencing, but no birds. The last time here, this was being renovated. They even added a viewing area where you can walk out into the oasis. Maybe that why there are no birds.
Uneventful travel this morning. The BTS was rather empty. Got to the gym just as Fahlaep was coming up the alley on his scooter. Started off with 6 laps around the block. Now I remember how the sweat flows. Eventhough the outside temperature was really comfortable, the humidity when running kicked in today. Fahlaep is still easing me into the workouts. He said no jump rope today, but I did about 8 minutes because it seems to make my knees and hip fell better. I know that makes no sense, but whatever works…. A little stretching and then into the ring for pad work. I’m the only one here this morning early so I get the ring first. Santafaa came in and did some weights for a
BTS train to Punnawithi
Inbound morning train. The Nana station is not very crowded early. bit. He’s working up to a fight on the 26th. I hope the date holds. I’d enjoy going to see him fight. He’s in amazing shape for being “old” in terms of Muay Thai fighters. Most are young and hit their prime in their 20’s. I’ll see if I can get a picture with him this afternoon.
The well-rested feeling left quickly once in the ring. I think it was just 4 rounds of I think only 4 minutes, but it felt like 10 rounds of 10 minutes. Speaking of 10, that was the operative word for the morning session. The first round was just a standard warmup round of punches, elbows, knees, and blocks. At least it started that way. Here’s where the 10 comes in. 10 fast kicks right and then left. That was followed by 10 teeps (front kicks) right and left. And of course the shoulder pleasing “10” punches, however he decides to count them to 10. Next round was more punching sequences, working in some covers with bob and weaves. Of course each round added in 10’s of everything. Working on more footwork today. Fahlaep was pointing out when I am off balance and
Walk to the gym
This little road is very busy in the morning. I had to cross the street to buy water, and felt like I was in the Frogger video game. Made it across and back with all my lives intact. why. I seem to be narrowing my stance on the kick or leg block retractions. I’ll have to be more aware of that going forward. Third round same as 2nd except there was one set of 20 kicks, both left and right. I’m feeling those as I sit here typing poorly. The last round today seemed to pick up the pace a bit more with the same punch and elbow series, and the 10 kicks. But the big finish was right/left punches (aka machine gun punches) until the bell rang. No idea how long that went but I felt like quitting a couple times. I powered through and was completely worn out after that. He gave me a 5 minute rest break and then a round of shadow boxing. I keep losing track of the rounds on the gym timer, so it was somewhere between 1 and 2 rounds of that. Next up was one round on the heavy bags. The outer covering of those backs at one time used to be a nice smooth finish. Now it’s a bit rough, like kicking 40 grit sandpaper. Managed to get my first cut on the top of my foot from that bag. Good thing I have about 100 bandaids. Finishing up the bag work, i decided to work in a little bit of weight training and sit-ups. Nothing dramatically intense, but just enough to finish up the morning. As I was leaving, Santi came out and remembered me and was happy to see me. I’ll see him later this afternoon. It’s good to see a few of the guys from way back still there. I was a bit more tired on the walk back to the BTS station today. Now that the Oreo machiatto is finished, I need to venture out to change some money. It’s a little better than last trip at 35.37 THB to the dollar. Now to find the best rate on the street that will give close to that. It will be a good chance to see what eating places are still there, and what new ones are open.
