The Story Of Hualian and the Deep, Dark and Dangerous Taroko Gorge We arriaved to Hualian 2 days before my birthday. Hualien is a small city on the less populated eastern coast of Taiwan. People from this area wear home-made-yarn embellished purses—hats—belts. These people are direct descendants of the aboriginal Indians that lived in the mountains. We noticed more BETLE NUT here than any other place we had been. Strangers would smile as they passed by—exposing their BRIGHT RED teeth and gums. Why it turns red in the mouth I have no idea, it is green when you buy it. Look down at the street, and you’ll see red splotches all over the place. All the people we have talked to about Taroko Gorge complain about how boring the city of Hualian is—that the only reason ... read more

We awoke early on the second day and caught a train down the East coast of Taiwan to Hualien. Once there we found a scooter to rent, filled up with gas and headed to Toroko Gorge National Park about 20 kms away. Taroko gorge was once home to the Atayal people who were known for weaving, facial tattoos, and headhunting. The majority of the Atayal people have moved out of the gorge, but some still remain working at hotels, resorts, and selling woven and leather products. The gorge itself is filled with marble-walled canyons and gigantic cliffs. The road through the gorge connects with the cross-central highway, but we went only as far as Tienhsiang. The road winds through canyons and at times is so narrow only one car can fit through. There were many tour ... read more

For more of my photos, or to buy my book, please visit www.nickkembel.com Soaring Cliffs, Waterfall Tunnels, and Eternal Shrines Taroko Gorge (Tai Lu Ge) is Taiwan's most famous natural attraction. I have now done two journeys to this beautiful valley, where cliffs rise from the river bed to the skies, and terrifying tunnels dig through the mountains to allow buses and trekkers to pass. My first trip was with my family last summer, and more recently I went with some friends. The most famous portion of Taroko Gorge is called the Tunnel of Nine Turns. It is a walking-only path that runs parallel to the main road, and has some of the most dramatic scenery in the entire valley. In the summer time the Taiwanese heat was unbearable, so my family and I sought ... read more

Greetings from Eastern Taiwan Tuesday, 19th August 2008 The day trip to the Taroko National Park was memorable because:- It offered a great orientation for first time visitors to the gorge. Precious time was not wasted on shopping. Reasonable stopping time at the various attractions in the park. Sumptuous lunch was served at the Grand Formosa Tiensiang. I missed the black pepper salmon fried rice, the scallops (very fresh) with asparagus and the steam yellow chicken. So much so that when I got back to Singapore, I requested mum to try adding salmon and black pepper to her fried rice. It has since become a family favourite. Mr friendly guide was knowledgeable and passionate about "his" park. Even though he has been doing this for the past 20 years, I could still sense his child-like excitement ... read more

18th August 2008 "One of the chief aims of this Taiwan trip was to spend sometime in Hualien, which I've read it often but never had a chance to see it for myself ..." Three hours on the Tze Chiang Express (自强号) down the eastern coast of Taiwan brought me to the charming city of Hualien. With a population of only 15% of Taipei, the city has maintained a relaxed and laid-back pace by the sea. I had come to Hualien on a 3 days 2 nights mission to the Taroko Gorge, eastern Taiwan most popular destination. It was a bonus that the city itself is interesting on its own. Staying at the city centre was great as I was within walking distance to many of the food and shopping outlets. Hualien is a relatively young ... read more

The day before we left Hualien to come home, Suzanne and I went to church at Agape House one last time. "Agape" (unconditional love) House is a Christian alcohol and drug residential recovery facility about twenty minutes north of town on Hwy 9. This is my farewell to the men and women living in the place: Journeys Suzanne and I are going home to Canada tomorrow. In other words, we are on a journey. So are you—but your journey is quite a bit different from ours—and very similar to the best-known journey in the Bible. Exodus. The journey from bondage in Egypt to the Promised Land. The Israelites called their Promised Land “the Land of Milk and Honey”. They expected it to be a place of ease and plenty—but in reality it was neither. More about ... read more

Well, I have my world-class Hwy 193, and my picture of a farmer's truck and his sheaves, but leaving this beautiful place that I have come to love is certainly no cause for rejoicing. I tried a video of firing up Esmerelda, but it's in kind of slow motion. I had a choice between filming or having a rear brake, so I took it easy. Using the front brake alone can cause low-speed instability on a motorbike, so I didn't film for long. OK, I admit that comparing being housebound (for a moving sale) to house arrest is a bit of hyperbole, but it certainly didn't seem so at the time. It was very quiet yesterday (Saturday), but at least Ryan and Iris came through. We have "sort of" known them for months, and only as ... read more

I added a couple of brief clips about the local scenery. Unless someone thinks I have nice feet, I should apologize for showing them at the end of the vids. Before you even look into the window of a business establishment here—fat lot of good the sign does when I can’t read—you can spot the Internet Cafes a mile away. The giveaway is the disproportionate number of bicycles from kids who should be doing homework instead of “play computer”, and jazzed up scooters from the young pups who should have better things to do than “play computer” as well. Guangfu has one such place, and what a money machine it must be for the proprietor! Across the street from the place is a restaurant I will never forget. My good friend Joe took me there for ... read more

Returning teachers are entitled to select the location of their next assignment in Taiwan and (if we were staying) I would be ready to move on to somewhere else. I had to write on the request form that I would not be returning, and the options read like a travel guide: 1. Taipei (City or County) 2. Taichung (City or County) 3. Tainan (City or County) 4. Taitung (City or County) 5. Yilan (City or County) 6. Kaohsiung (City or County) 7. Taiwan Strait islands (Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu) 8. Nantou County 9. Miaoli County I felt as if I was signing a divorce paper or a surrender document when I picked up the pen—such was the sense of loss after a total of four wonderful years here. Anyway, it’s done. I’m off the market. It will ... read more

There are a few videos in this chapter--and I know that they will be of limited interest other than to foreigners who have lived in Taiwan and have now gone home. One of the biggest hits, believe it or not, was the musical garbage truck from a few chapters ago! Quite a few people asked for a copy of it. It’s a bit disconcerting really—all the filming and snapping I’ve been doing over the last two years, and the common response is “What a cool garbage truck? Could you send me a copy?” We are back now, from a marvelous yet bittersweet weekend in Taipei. It was Dragon Boat Festival, and the trains were very crowded. We got to Kim and Stephanie’s place mid-evening on Friday—early enough to have a good long talk before bedtime. The ... read more
