Yesterday we were worthless and barely made it out of the house. When we did go, Eva walked around the city with us and we bought food to cook for dinner. We made a massive beef-filled squash and some salad and we couldn't eat it all, so we're gonna reheat it tonight. Today we went with Eva to Taruko National Park. It was really beautiful, but the trails we "hiked" were sort of a joke. The first one we did, the Swallow Grotto, was literally next to the main road. The second one, Lushui Trail, was overlooking the road -- not really the experience I'd been expecting, but nonetheless pleasant. Tomorrow we head to Taipei and meet our next CS host! When we woke up we decided to go to the hot springs that were "nearby". We took Eva's moped and had to ride through the freezing cold. Really it wasn't that cold, but the wind made it miserable. By the time we got there, 2 hours later and after a few stops for directions, I could barely walk. There are two hot springs places and we went to the first one we saw, Hoya Hot Springs. They have two buildings across the road from each other, one is a hotel, and one has the hot spring pools. We quickly changed and got in the cooler of the pools -- we couldn't bear to stick our icicle-like toes and fingers in the hot ones. So after we warmed up a bit we played around with all the ... read more

We took off in a train out to Hualian along the Eastern coast of Taiwan. It was quite the beautiful ride containing amazing views of the Pacific Ocean and the countryside. We got to Hualian at about 2 pm and rented 3 scooters between the 5 of us. Needless to say, I had never driven a moped before and the start of our adventure to Taroko Gorge was terrifying, exhilarating and superb. As soon as we got on the highway I felt much more comfortable. You’d be surprised how much power a 125 cc engine has. Hitting a consitant 60 km/h feels about 3 times as fast on a moped. The adrenaline rush was incredible, as we passed by rice fields with the ocean in sight. We started to head up the gorge after about an ... read more

Today Ronald went out to scout prices for the train and/or bus to Hualien. It seemed that we needed to take a train to Kaoshiung and then a bus or train to Taidung and then another bus or train to Hualien. We packed and got in a cab (with help from Thomas and Bárbara) to go to the station. We got there at 13:50 and the woman at the counter sold us a ticket for 13:59 and it should take about 2 hours. When the train stopped and everyone got off, we had gone one stop too far. We were in Pingtung, so we asked a couple of conductors and eventually just took all our stuff with us to ask at the information counter. The woman sold us a ticket by train to Hualien leaving at ... read more

It was an early morning as the River Trekking company was to pick us up at the hostel at 7:15am. We quickly packed up our things and headed downstairs to the lobby area and waited for about 5 minutes. Then 4 men showed up and we decided they were the River Trekking company there to pick us up. They didn't speak much English and we were thinking how are they going to tell us directions or what to do later in the day. We hadn't eaten breakfast and thought we should get some food before we head out on an all day trekking adventure. We told the men in Chinese that we wanted some food and they quickly pulled over to a little shop along the road that sold baozi, bread with meat inside, very common ... read more

On Tuesday morning, we decided to get an early start and head to Hua-lien so we could spend the day seeing the city instead of wasting a day traveling. We took the subway to Taipei Main Station and found our way to the HSR(High Speed Rail) and TRA(Taiwan Railway Admin) area. We knew we wanted to go south and east but we didn't know the name of the line. We were helped by another friendly Taiwanese that spoke no English but we knew enough Mandarin in order to communicate what we wanted. The train left in 25 minutes and was a little more than we were told by the Information Center but it was coming from the Automated Machine and that was the price 441NTD/person=$14 for a 2hr and 10 minute train ride. The train was ... read more

Taroko (meaning magnificent and beautiful in the local Truku native language) is one of the seven national parks of Taiwan and proves to be one of the best ways to spend a weekend here in Taiwan. As I did the best to convey with my pictures, Taroko represents ancient Chinese landscape: tall green mountains, deep valleys with clear rivers at the bottom, all eerily framed with a heavy mist. With a temple or two typically poking out from any viewpoint, one can easily get the sense of the spirit of an older China. While the man made trails and bridges may at first give the impression this is an easy park to get around in, nothing could be further from the truth. Given the steepness of the mountains and sheer drop-offs from narrow trails, this park ... read more

Today Cynthia and I went 'river tracing' just outside Hualien on the east coast of Taiwan. I won't write a huge amount because the photos are more entertaining, but essentially the day involved climbing up the river bed and drinking most of the water in the process, it was really good fun! ... read more

Next stop, Hualien 花莲! The day started pretty early as we had to catch 7.30am train to Hualien. In about 3 hrs' time at Hualien station, we were greeted by the taxi driver-cum-tour guide, Mr Zhuang. With Mr Zhuang around, the trip around Hualien's attraction became more interesting and convenient. After settling our accommodation and getting a coffee fix (needed a perk, man), our Hualien trip commences officially. Mr Zhuang brought us to the Qi Xing Tan 七星潭, which was not the actual Qi Xing Tan 七星潭 many years ago. It used to refer to the lakes in the city. However, these lakes were covered up and no longer what it used to be. The current Qi Xing Tan 七星潭 is a recreational place by the eastern coast. There was a watermelon festival on the day ... read more
