Now where was I? Ah, after the safari and seeing the all elusive leopard. The next morning we left Tissa for a beach called Dikwella. Sam certainly knows where the best places to stay are. This small 8 roomed hotel was right on the beach with beautiful gardens and friendly staff and dogs! The Kadolana Beach Hotel had been hit hard during the Tsunami and there were photos of the devastation to prove it. Hard to believe now. The beach had beautiful white sand and rolling waves, I loved it. I was there for the full moon and it was a huge yellow ball rising up over the ocean and the glow reflected on the foam of the waves. There were large bats and lots of glowing fire flies, very romantic, well it could have been. ... read more

Hello everyone, After a few very busy days I've found some time to write. The flights weren't as bad as I expected. We had a good entertainment system onboard with Ethiad Airlines (movies, TV programmes, games) so the time went by a little quicker. The total journey including waiting time between flights was 16 hours. We got to our B&B at 6am, had a couple of hours sleep then went for a walk round the town. We ended the day at the beach. Dinner was a Sri lankan dish of chicken, seafood and rice. Daniel ordered Nasi Goreng and they forgot to put the meat in it!? They did bring him some meat when he pointed that out to them :) Daniel tried the local drink Arrak which is an alcoholic drink made of coconut. For ... read more

Hello from the 'teardrop' island of Sri Lanka, which I must say has made quite an impression on us! It takes the craziness of South East Asia to a whole new level and is certainly helping to prepare us for India! The people are really lovely and friendly (even when they are trying to scam us) and make the generally wonderfully hospitable S E Asian's look like they all are all joyless supermarket checkout chicks (no offence anyone). The weirdest thing is, even though Sri Lanka is becoming more frequented by western tourists we still feel like celebrities whenever we go anywhere! We are constantly being stared at and the service and hospitality we are offered is just ridiculously amazing! We have both started playing a little game where when we are stared at by yet ... read more

Am in Colombo waiting for my train to Kandy! I'm in the Galle Face Hotel which is a very fancy and snazzy old colonial hotel. I had a really really good buffet lunch with sooo many of the dishes that i would have had in stamford!! somehow they did seem to taste more authentic and better. I have just spent two nights on the cost in Silver Sands hotel which was very relaxing. I haven't had too many problems with mosquitos yet though which is def a good thing! At silver sands i managed to finish an entire book and spend most of the day either reading or sleeping. The humidity is rather intense however i'm getting used to it more (my body still thinks sweating is a good plan though sigh). The train from Negumbo ... read more

Sri-Lanka was a fun trip for us, even though it was short and sweet. We stayed in Beruwala. It is 2.5 hour drive from the city. We rented an apartment facing the beach side, which for us was a very simple paradise and not much to do but chill, hang out in the beach with cold beers, check out the turtle nesting ground and have curry for lunch and dinner. I wish we could have stayed longer with our friends, but there is always next time and this trip has given me more reasons to come back and explore Sri-Lanka. ... read more

In Colombo now and off to find our first Sri Lanka-couchsurfer Got a mobile phone number with Dialog, which I'd heard was supposed to be the best, and also turned out to be the most popular, if you count the number of Dialog shops available - it only cost 110 rupees (100 for the card, 10 for two passport copies), but it wouldn't be activated until the next day. I also bought 200 rupees worth of talking time, and that easily lasted the whole trip. Definitely worth buying! So good to have. But for that moment, the card still wasn't activated, so we had to use a phone box to call Yashasvin, our new host. That was rather cheap too, the call cost about 15 rupees. We had to take two buses, the 103 to Borella, ... read more

When I booked my flights to Sri Lanka, I thought I would visit Colombo for a few days during my Lunar New Year holiday. After reading blogs and advice in the travel forums, I realized that one should not miss the ancient cities in the Cultural Triangle and it's better for tourists to stay in Negombo beach town. It's located 15km away from the Bandaranaike international airport and it takes about 20 minutes to get there by taxi. One of the reasons for skipping Colombo capital city is that the accommodation there is more expensive, plus busy traffic, longer distance from the airport (one hour drive) and also not much to see. I had two options before my arrival in Sri Lanka. If I felt well, I would take a local bus to Dambulla (one of ... read more

Well here goes entry no.2....finished an amazing tiny stint in Singapore which culminated in a Singapore sling cocktail :)...Singapore food was amazing; I wish the deli could follow us around the world it was that good and cheap. And thus onto Sri Lanka where the queue at the airport resembled the first page of a where's wally book where they make the first one nice and easy for you;me and Tamara standing out from the crowd quite markedly...so much so that numerous times we were asked whether we were sure we had tickets for the right flight. Still the plane ride was comfortable enough with more leg room than the previous and plenty of tea so I was contented. Arrived at our hostel in Colombo very late, probably about midnight if not later but the beds ... read more

Welcome to Sri Lanka. We like this place already. It seems a little more organised and slightly less chaotic than India and the Sri Lankan people are so friendly. They have all heard of NZ thanks to Anchor butter and Shane Bond! Best of all it is quiet - the horn is only used when necessary! On arriving in Colombo it was not hard to notice the heavy security and check points. Sri Lanka held elections a couple of days before we arrived and the election results had been challenged by the opposition. A protest was planned for Wednesday but luckily we were leaving before that. There is still some uncertainty whether there will be a resurgence from the Tamil Tigers and the government in Colombo was still showing some caution - if that is the ... read more
