We arrived in Sri Lanka at7am walking through duty free you could buy anything from a fridge washing machine, tv, or just drink, chocolate and perfume (Assma) they were like garage lock ups about 25 in total. We meet our guide who takes us on a1/2 hour journey to our hotel. We were left alone for 4 hrs and then picked up for a tour of the town, The standard of living is very poor and is all around the town, packs of dogs roam the streets, as do cows and goats but due to their religious status have freedom to roam and can't be touch, um sorry I'm late for work cow in the road! Would thatwash I wonder? Children in the streets selling anything they can, very often they have no shoes, it was ... read more

We bought a camel and callee him Colin and then headed back to the hotel. Having got back to the hotel without incident, we watch a bit of the Yoevil and Man Utd game and then head to the airport. Well what an experience everyone for themselves, we queue for over 1.5 hours to get through customs and security. To get anywhere fast it seems you need to be in a wheelchair! ( I'm sure I only made a comment about this, as all will become clearer later on in the week).... read more

My arm has improved a little and today I can now lift it up to breast height without out excessive pain so I am feeling more positive about it. Still, a shame I could not ride to the Mackwoods Tea Museum and tea factory just a mere 15k down the valley. The journey was really incredible with the tea bushes in neat rows set across the hillside with many women plucking the leaves and putting them into large sacks on their backs. The top three fresh leaves are harvested every 10 days by about 6 women per acre of ground. The factory employs 600 women, who pick throughout the year, and many men who do the weighing, spraying, pruning and the grubbing up and replanting, which is done every 50 years. We saw the processes being ... read more

Kandy to Nuwara Eliya Up early and caught the train from Peradeniya Junction, outside Kandy for a 4 ½ hr journey to Nuwara Eliya 1900 metres up in the mountains. The carriages were already full and few seats were available so many of our group were standing, but not thankfully hanging of the sides like in Calcutta. As we moved up the line the people standing had risen somewhat and consisted of many nationalities from Polish, Chinese to French and many more, all paying the astronomical sum of 180 rupees (90p) for the long journey. As we gained height we came across the many tea plantations their factories and workers busy picking the new leaves. The area covered in tea is immense and quite spectacular. At the top we had a 7km bus journey, as soon ... read more

Started our stay in Sri Lanka with a week of resting and relaxation in a small town called Wadduwa which is on the coast about seventy km south of Colombo. The week was dominated by the crashing of the waves from the Indian Ocean on to the beach in front of our hotel. A never ending sound as our hotel was just up from the beach. Then on Wednesday we headed for the hills and the tea plantations near to Nuwara Eliya. There the tree bushes stretch for mile upon mile and it is not hard to see why tea is such an important part of the economy with most of the tea ending up in the UK. Quite obviously part of our visit included a trip round a tea factory to see the transformation from ... read more

If you’re drinking a cup of tea right now there’s a good chance it came from Sri Lanka, one of the world’s biggest exporters of tea, and most of it is grown right here in Nurawa Eliya. The drive from Kandy to Nurawa Eliya was spectacular. We climbed through the thick jungle through narrow winding roads, finally arriving at one of the highest towns in Sri Lanka, at more than 1800 metres above sea level. Improbably clinging to the sides of the mountains you soon begin to see a sea of tea. When the English came to Sri Lanka this mountainous area became a popular holiday spot, no doubt because of its cool climate. It’s known as “little England” but I needn’t think the Cotswalds worry too much about the competition. Tea was first grown here ... read more

We left beautiful Tangalle early Sunday morning, again before Dawn… While it is pitch dark, and a bit scary even with our super-duper 5000 lumens headlamps, it really is a special time to be out on the roads… We are now turing inland, and we started our day on a VERY quiet secondary highway… The first hour or so on days like these is so special - without all the heavy traffic - you can listen to the world slowly wake up from its soft slumber… All the morning sounds.. the birds, the crows (let me tell you about crows later), bats, roosters, dogs (And PEACOCKS!?) - all became one harmonious song as we rode along… Watching the sun slowly wake in the horizon letting the world know a new day is upon us. It had ... read more

I think we all woke up with hangovers this morning. I shall speak for myself here but the fact we ended up having Pizza Hut speaks for itself. Firstly, we had a wander around Kandy with a coffee shop stop. Kandy lake was in sight and then we walked towards Buddha hill, where a larger than life Buddha sat. A bit of religious culture and also a beautiful view from the top. Pizza time. Just what we needed. Tim sadly was leaving for Negombo so it was back to 3 of us - heading for Nuwara Eliya, also known as 'Little England'. I wanted to find out why. The bus journey was long and winding, but Hayley and I kept ourselves occupied with conversation and games. Arriving there in the dark, with no accommodation booked and ... read more

"Up Country" to the central mountains: Nuwara Eliya (AKA Little England) Getting a ticket on the train to Nuwara Eliya looked very unlikely, as during the school holidays Sri Lankans are given vouchers for train travel and all the trains were said to be fully booked. However, a person helping us "had a connection" and we finally got two tickets on one of the additional trains that had been added to the normal schedule. On the morning of our trip, we stood bewildered at the huge Colombo train station, till a helpful man authoritatively took us under his wing, guided us through the entrance gate and signaled us to benches for waiting. He stayed right near us (I was thinking, "What service for confused travellers.") and when when our train came in he hustled us and ... read more
