Today, we did a morning hike through Horton Plains National Park. Leaving our hotel, we weren't really sure what to expect. The park area is located about an hour drive up windy roads (about 40 km from Nuwara Eliya) into the highlands. Once in the park, you hike around a 9 km loop, up and down the rolling plains and through the Montane forest. At an altitude of 2,100 meters above sea level, Horton Plains spreads across over 3000 hectares. Because of the large number of endemic flora and fauna species, Horton Plains was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From a distance we were able to see deer, monkeys and buffalo, as well as a number of birds. The walk took us about 3 hours to complete. As the plains are located so high up, ... read more

Today we left Kandy and drove the twisty, turning roads up the mountains 70 kms to Nuwara Eliya. It took us over 3 hours to make the trip. You don't get any where too quickly in this country. On route, we stopped to walk in the tea fields and take a tour of a tea processing plant. It was all every interesting. The scenery is amazing! Rolling hillsides covered in tea plants. A tea plucker picks about 20 kg of tea leaves in 9 hours and gets paid Rs 550 (less $5). It's incredible how quickly the vegetation and temperature changes. Leaving Kandy, the temperature was 23c. Arriving in Nurwara Eliya the temperature is 10c (damp and overcast)....I am freezing. Had to bundle up and put on long pants. We are staying at the St. Andrew ... read more

We had a bit of a lie in this morning and a relatively quiet day, which actually was quite welcome... We hit the road at 8:30 to head to Nuwara Eliya and stopped off at a couple of places on the way. Firstly, a suspension bridge on the way out of Kandy. There are some fantastic views from the bridge and it's a good photo opportunity. There are only 6 people allowed on the bridge at any one time and man, it's bouncy! Next quick stop off was the Kandy War cemetery, it's only quite small, but very well kept and peaceful. After a wander round and a few photos we set back off on the road again. Part way on our journey, our guide told us to check our legs for leeches - I was ... read more

27th Feb - Nuwara Eliya, not much from S and J today. Perhaps they are still embarassed after they witnessed their father ranting to the tuk tuk driver who had cheated him and his family. Perhaps shouting "thief" numerous times across a buy street was not the way to handle such a situation. So, it falls to the “Full English-man” to describe this place so I’ll do it briefly. Favoured by colonial English and Scottish tea planters for it’s cool climate, it’s quite surreal and comes complete with Victoria Park, members only Lakeside Club (with paddle boat Swans), race course, and lots of almost typically English houses, English plus a “hint of Ceylonese”. We stayed at The Trevene, once the summer residence of the British Governor, for use when Colombo and the coast became too hot. ... read more

After breakfast we set off from Kandy to visit an elephant orphanage but our driver guide, Jaywa advised us to visit the Millennium Elephant Foundation (MEF) instead which he thought was better and less ‘touristy’. The MEF charity has eleven elephants rescued from situations such as ill treatment from mahout owners or retirement from working in local temples. The MEF charity was founded in August 1999 with the assistance of the World Society for the Protection of Animals and has been working continually to improve the care, protection and treatment of elephants in Sri Lanka by providing a place of sanctuary and medical services and facilities for the country’s fast dwindling elephant population. Since the MEF’s inception, care and sanctuary has been provided to more than 60 elephants. The day we visited the foundation had elephants ... read more

K- A couple of days ago we spent 2 hours standing on a packed and rickety bus in Sri Lanka. I havent worked my upper arms and core so much since commuting from Wimbledon to Waterloo every morning back in the 1990s! Surprisingly the 2 hours went quite fast. Much like running, the first 20 minutes was a killer but after we got into the flow it was OK. In fact by the end I was doing the odd boogie to the Sri Lankan hip hop blaring from the bus' speakers - not muscle spasming as Mark alleges. We have not been favored with good weather here and we both have colds so it says something for the country that we are still enjoying ourselves alot. Sri Lanka is a predomnantly Buddhist nation and our first ... read more

- Yala National Park - Thump, thump, thump. Haley and I quickly look up at the ceiling of our bungalow in Sri Lanka's Yala National Park. We had not planned on seeing any wildlife until our safari tomorrow morning, but the noise on our roof clearly wasn't from the White-breasted Kingfisher we saw earlier - or the wild boar that chased us unto our porch just 30 minutes ago. It was a large troop of monkeys that decided to have a party on our roof (without our consent). Haley and I eagerly ran from window to window checking out our new housemates! Once the troop moved on, we called for an escort to dinner (apparently we had to watch out for elephants roaming through the resort grounds and the hotel required escorts at night) and then ... read more

Sri Lanka is famous for it's tea and today we are off to visit the plantations in the mountains near the town of Nuwera Eliya, but before that we stopped by a place in Kandy where we can experience the ayurvedic massage, this little place that Mr. T was recommended was difficult to find, we went up and down hilly streets and asking every passers by where the hell it is, we found it and for 1 hour costs 1,500 rupees, roughly $15, I was looking forward to a good massage I have been sore from walking a lot the last couple days but all I got was a disappointment, the woman rub oil on me and just rubbed it on my muscles until it creates friction and you feel warm sensation, it was really crappy, ... read more
