Back in BKK after a month out in Laos. What a differance! Laos is so laid back and beautiful! There may be a curfew in the country, but it's still a great time. We did a bit of a round about route and went from Lauang Prabang to Vang Viene and then back up to Phosaven and then back down to Vietiene then on to the 4000 islands (also called Si Phan Don ). Laos is one of the places that i am glad to have got to now... it will clearly be a tourist trap/paradise in the next few years, and i at least got to see some of the gems before they get over crowded! (and yes Em, clearly by me going there and ultimately talking to other travelers - and writing this blogg - ... read more

Well, this is it! I arrived last night, after a blowout night in Toronto, somehow managed to survive the last night of rumba with Lex and Zee, we went out to some vaguely hip-turning-yuppie establishment, me with my puto tshirt (why don't people appreciate the punkness of the idea?) and freezing cause I locked myself out of my hostel room (by moving, by tired mistake, into a room with a broken door, finally noticing it, and then fixing the door --- too well!), so no coat, no money (found that later), and most importantly, no energy left after carneval for partying. In the next few days, in dribs and drabs, I'll be posting up all the photos of the trip, by the date, so it will be necessary to scroll down to see all the photos ... read more

Ah yes, another airport to add to my list of airports I've visited (this is not a real list, I am not that sad). Time to wander around aimlessly for a few hours while waiting for my transit to Fiji. So much fun. I staggered from gate to gate zombie-like and bleary-eyed, telling myself this was the only exercise I was gonna get for 48hours so I might as well make the most of it. At least I did manage to take a picture of the sunset. And to reward myself for my stumbling around, I bought myself a little tub of HagenDaz and for a few minutes I was in heaven. Maybe next time I step foot in South Korea I'll get a chance to at least leave the airport, but for now, bye bye ... read more

Click on the film reals to the left to see some of our movie magic. Ah, January…Korea’s coldest month and the perfect time to partake in some snow- and ice-induced fun. First up came a Subzero evening - a bar in the cool HongDae area of Seoul. EVERYTHING is made of ice (minus the floor, much to Mel’s relief)…the walls, the chairs and tables, the candlestick holders, the artworks and sculptures, the bar and even the glasses. Upon entry we each received a very regal silver poncho, which we wore over everything we needed for the already subzero temperatures outside. Being the only guests meant that we weren’t shy about burning up the dance floor to stay warm. As it turned out, the weekend we chose to try skiing (the third time ever for each ... read more

Despite the rudeness of the people I really enjoyed our short time here in Korea. It is mainly the older people that seemed inconsiderate to us but I think that is just their culture and we are not used to that. On the subways or even on the street, they will push you out of the way without even an "excuse me"(or the Korean equivalent). If you are in front of them in line they will literally grab you and move you out of the way. On the way to Seoul, I accidentally put my train ticket into the machine and couldnt get it back. I explained this to the man in the ticket booth and he basically told me "Too bad, you shouldn't have put it in there in the first place" and made me ... read more

So we left off after just arriving at Chris's in Korea. We stayed with Chris the first night (there was only one bed so he ended up sleeping on the floor....the appartment is just one room) and then his friend Tim gave us his appartment for the rest of the week and stayed with his girlfriend Becky. They're the coolest people, Tim once spent a couple months following the Greatful Dead on tour. The past 4 days we've seen some of the sights in Korea and a lot of the bars. During the days we went to the business district and all there was to do was play in a fountain of water! We also found a market with cheap clothes and the most disgusting smells, which we partly attributed to the dried octopus they sell ... read more

I haven't put up a blog in a while so I wanted to post some pictures of what I've been up to lately. I can't believe it, but I've almost been here for 6 months already. Though the winter really dragged on, time is flying by now. Seoul in Spring is alot more livable than in winter. The mountains around the city are turning green, the sun has come back out and the air is, well still polluted as ever, but just feels fresher. The other day a korean friend helped me order a bike off the internet. I couldn't believe when it was hand delivered to my office the next day. So lately I've been rolling around Seoul, trying my best not to knock over any of the 10 million or so people who live ... read more

Classes started on Thursday the second. The system here is “try before you buy,” giving students a chance to attend classes before they decide which to take. It turned out to work in my favor, as one I had signed up for was not at all what I had thought it was. Plus another that I wasn't excited about looked like the most interesting class I will have here at Yonsei. Walking into a sea of people the day classes started jolted me back into a place I had seen before, but I couldn’t quite put my fingers on it. Oh, yes. That was it. A popular Korean soap opera where students ran to and fro greeting one another with huge smiles and words in expressive crescendos that I could not comprehend. As I watched from ... read more

Thursday Afternoon: I have just had the most traumatic last few hours. Two to be exact, and they were spent in the Woorie Bank. I first had to exchange the rest of my USA currency. Then I went to go open my account. I gave the teller my money order and she stood up and hurriedly escorted me back to the currency exchange speaking to me in Korean the whole way. This was after she had asked me if I spoke Korean and I told her that I did not. So I waited in line again at the currency exchange (after waiting in line at the bank). When it was finally my turn, the lady told me that the money order (which contained all of my money other than what I carried over on the plane) ... read more
