As far as weeks go in Korea, this one was my toughest. I was starting to feel that my wander lust had completely worn out and that I should head home. After a "Western" breakfast burrito, a friend and I headed out for our now daily walk around town. We decided to take a new road which ended at a bridge construction site. After a few seconds of deliberation, we crossed the barriers and walked down the closed road. It lead to a place which seemed very un-Jeonju like. A small creek rushed through the neighborhood which made for a tranquil setting. Little concrete bridges created a path over the creek to the homes of a few lucky Jeonju residents. Even the dog looked content to just listen to the water rush by! On our journey ... read more

The first weekend in July, I headed to Seoul to meet up with a new friend. As soon as we arrived in town, we hit the streets of Itaewon. Itaewon is "little America". It even has a Taco Bell, but unfortunately it was closed for the night. We hit a few clubs, did jager bombs and ate a shawarma before heading in the the "night". Since it was nine in the morning when we called it quits, we hit the subway to ride around town. After a afternoon of being a sleep-deprived zombie, we tried to make an appearance on a river-party boat. After a few minutes of being crowded by other people, we got off the boat before it set sail and went home to sleep. Sunday morning, we went Incheon for some amazing seafood. ... read more

As I didn't have any big plans for the weekend, Min took us hiking up Moak Mountain. I had a sore throat from smoking a cigarette and taking a shot of Barcardi 151 all in one night. Whenever I do stupid things like this, I always get a cold. I was having a serious lack of oxygen going up the mountain! I'm sure I looked as lame as I felt. We picked the trail that ended at a Taoist temple. At the temple, there was a sign announcing some doctor had reached enlightenment there. We thought that was cool until Lindsey did some research and found the guy living in Sedona, Arizona with a multi-million dollar business helping the masses reach englightenment. Since the Dalhi Lama won't even profess this, I think this is a bunch ... read more

The apartment we live in has started a hiking club; they meet once or twice a month at a nearby park and go hiking. Our first hike was at Sinsido, an island just south of Kunsan. To get there we drove along the new Saemangeum wall, the same road I ran the Half Marathon. Well when we got to the start of the trail and looked up I knew this would be a typical Korean hike; we went up over 100 steps. We stopped by the water and had lunch, one of the members who was not that familiar with hiking and packing lunch brought rice for everybody, over 5 pounds. It was a nice hike, many ups and downs, but lots of great views. ... read more

Our Goal

We took a hike at Maison Park, which means Horse's Ear, these mountains always reminds me of mountains in Tailand. We went here on a rainy day and it was still crowded at the main temple site. It was a long walk up to the temple but you are rewarded with a very cool sight, although it is not a very old temple, it is one of the most unique temples I've been to here in Korea. On the way down from our hike we passed all thses rib BBQ shops and we were very hungry, so we went in and had ribs, they were horrible, the cook did not know how to properly cook them, they were directly over the fire and staying there a long time to cook, they were so dry. After our ... read more

First week in S. Korea! Just getting settled in and used to my new job. We went out with our adult students friday night. I had a lot of fun hanging with them and getting to know them better. Sautrday, we headed out of town to a small town named Gimje. I got to see a 1200 year old Buddhist temple. Snapped a pic of a Buddhist monk chanting his prayers. I enjoyed seeing a monk in person. After checking out all the temples, we headed up the mountain. Everything was so green and beautiful. It is very common for Koreans to be buried in the mountains. Since they don't have grave markers, they indicate a grave with a mound of earth. Many families were having picnics by the graves of their deceased family. I could ... read more

Hanok Village and Jeonju Cultural Center Today was the most incredible day! They took us to a traditional village and a cultural center. I've seen and done so many cool things now. First we made a picture frame with a type of paper that Jeonju is famous for. Well, really we made the frame out of cardboard but covered it with beautiful paper. It was very funny because we all looked like 3rd graders trying to do crafts. One guy, Dave from London, talked about how nervous he was because he was terrible at crafts. "My art teacher came up to me on the last day of primary school and told me I was the worst artist he'd ever met in 30 years of teaching," he said. Well, we all thought he was doing ok for ... read more

EPIK Orientation Day 2 The day arrived for our little medical check-ups to find all EPIK teacher's irrationally nervous about failing the drug test by some fluke accident or finding out they have some sort of serious disease they were unaware of. The thing most people were not concerned about turned out to be my own personal disaster! They told us to stop drinking anything after dinner before the drug test so I stopped drinking water around 7pm...then the urine test wasn't until 8 am. When I went to "perform" there was just nothing. I kept going back to see if what I'd manage to put int the little dixie cup they gave me (yes, a little paper cup!) was enough and the poor guy just kept saying "no, I'm so sorry". I drank 1 bottle ... read more

Korea offers a lot of trekkable mountains. 'Trekkable' I mean less than 1000m, so that a person without extraordinary stamina can reach the summit in a few hours ;) Mt. Daedun is one of them. The place What makes this place stand out from many other similar mountains in Korea, or for that matter India, is its two bridges. As you slowly make your way up the top, you reach the first bridge. It is a sort of a small suspension bridge, around 40m long that connects two mountains, around 300m from sea level. The cables of the suspension bridge are fixed onto the two mountains that it connects. Walking on that bridge and looking down from it is a special experience. It is around a 100m dead drop down. In a strong gust, the bridge ... read more
