Yesterday we looked in our cupboards to find something to eat. It wasn't good news. We quite literally only had bread and butter left. Oh, and 2 min noodles. But since we've been eating noodles for a week now we decided it's time to go do some proper food shopping. Instead of taking a taxi $7* ride to the closest E-Mart like last time. we caught the free shuttle into Ilsan, about an hours drive. We then walked the 3 blocks to the supermarket there, another huge grocery store. Every time we go to one of these stores it amazes me what they have. We were so keen to buy fruit, but a bag of apples costs almost $4 and a huge pear goes for $2.5. Crazy! Veg is also almost as expensive, but we ... read more

Birthday Day!! Yaay!! Happy birthday me! The day started off well and ended up being one of the most fantastic days ever! Darrell brought me coffee in bed and sang Happy Birthday.... (as crazy as it sounds, it's actually OK to sleep with your door unlocked in Korea!) and the day was off to a great start. My first class was a T-shirt making class and about 5 min before the beginning of the class D came charging in with the biggest bunch of balloons I have ever seen and informed me that where ever I went, the balloons were to follow* later in the day it was decided that the balloons were not enough and a party hat, bow tie and "It's my birthday, please sign my balloons" sign should also be adorned. Amongst ... read more

We taught our first classes today! Woohoo!! What a great feeling! We both ended up having really big turn outs which is the best! It's a really wierd mix of feelings here in EV. You feel like an everyday nut but are treated like superstars straight out of Hollywood with everyone greeting you and waving to you all over the place... and that's on a quiet day! On the busier days, typically Tues, Thurs, Sat and Sun, we're often stopped and asked if we'd be in their photo ...after my Travel Agency class two of the students even asked for autographs! All the men are regularly told that they're 'very handsome' and the ladies are told they're 'very beautiful'! It's going to be tough coming back to the real world! Hehe ... read more

We woke up this morning in the compact little back packers tucked away in the back alleys of Korea's largest city. The free breakfast was surprisingly good, toast with cheese and ham. A fantastic break from the stretch of local food we've been subjecting our bodies to for the last few days. Kimchi (spicy pickled cabbage) with every meal makes for nice warm sleep at night, but sometimes you need a break! The idea for the day was to go to Bukhamsan national park just north of Seoul to hike 3 of the peaks and get a view from above. But as our luck would have it, we woke up to a steady drizzle that looked like it was here to stay. One of the benefits of being new to a place is that there's ... read more

Today didn't really go as planned. We had wanted to get up pretty early to get head into Seoul, since it takes about an hour and a half of travel time either way. Despite both of us setting alarm clocks, we only woke at around 11h30am. All in all it turned out not to be such a bad thing. I think both of us needed a bit of a break. We have also not really had a chance yet to move into our rooms properly. We used most of the afternoon just to clean our apartments, put up some pics on the walls and unpack properly. I (Darrell) have covered most of my wall space with some of the best photos from the past couple of years, so I have constant reminders of my freinds ... read more

Cathy discovered her favourite food tonight. As part of an initiative to get us teachers more in touch with the local culture, a group of us piled into taxis this evening and went to a shabu-shabu restaurant down the road. This is a really fun evening out. The tables are very low and you sit on flat pillows on the gound. In the centre of the table is a dip which holds a iron pot over a gas cooker. Inside the pot is a spicy vegetable stew. Each person at the table is given a plate which has about a dozen pieces of very thinly cut raw beef. The whole thing then works a bit like a fondue. You use your chopsticks to dip the meat into the rapidly boiling stew. Within a few seconds the ... read more

Today was a pretty full day. We spent the morning and afternoon wastching the classes we're going to be teaching, starting next week I guess. From 4h30 to 6 we had a staff meeting, which was a bit boring, but it think it's because we're new, so we're not up to date with what's going on. We had spoken about going through to Seoul again with one of the teachers who was playing a gig, but by the time 7h30 came we were both pretty tired. Last night we didn't get nuch sleep because of the Seoul trip, even when we got back to our room at 1h30 am we were still buzzing so much from being in the big city that it took a while to get to sleep. Just after we decided we were ... read more

...ooh, i discovered the best recipe for bad breath! we went out to dinner in one of the neighbouring (only an hour in the bus!) towns and had a kind of sit around the table and braai your own food meal (Galbi) which was pretty kiff -more about it in the blog from the 14th. FYI: Braai-ing a combination of garlic (and no, not the wussie diluted powder stuff us westeners use... i mean whole cloves!) kimchee and pork with a wasabi cabbage soup you can dunk the meat in is NOT good for morning breath! It wasn't so bad last night... BUT THIS MORNING! After all the fumes have been marinading in ones mouth for a few hours over night... baah i stinky!! i could taste the garlik and kimchee and wasabi and just about ... read more

It's hard to give an update of what we're really doing right now. There are no kids, so teaching isn't that big at the moment. I'll explain... English Village is sort of like a theme park. We've been hired to teach the One Day Program (ODP), which means that kids come to the village for the day with parents or teachers, and buy tickets to certain lessons. We then do the very interactive lessons with them. Apparently 2 weeks ago when it was school holidays the place was flooded, but the schools have all just opened, so the kids are all focusing on their curriculums. Apparently soon it will start to pick up as the schools start bringing the kids here on outings. For now we're supposed to be observing the classes and learning how to ... read more

We arrived at the airport at a frosty 3:45am! After negotiating customs etc we were out of the airport at 4:45. Our taxi driver greeted us with his "Darrell and Cathy" card and escorted us to his van. Someone in my family has just mentioned that it was a bit chilly last Saturday... well, you should know what chilly is! The minute we stepped onto Incheon soil outside the airport we were greeted by my (Cath) first -2degree C wind. Ahhh crazy cold!!! Although "Ahhh crazy cold!!!" were my first thoughts Darrell seemed to be flooded with his really great memories of his stay in America which kept him bubbling for ages :) The driver seemed to be in high spirits considering he'd probably been up since about 3 to fetch two westeners whose language we ... read more
