Balloons for my love!
Too much? There's no such thing! Birthday Day!! Yaay!! Happy birthday me!
The day started off well and ended up being one of the most fantastic days ever! Darrell brought me coffee in bed and sang Happy Birthday.... (as crazy as it sounds, it's actually OK to sleep with your door unlocked in Korea!) and the day was off to a great start.
My first class was a T-shirt making class and about 5 min before the beginning of the class D came charging in with the biggest bunch of balloons I have ever seen and informed me that where ever I went, the balloons were to follow* later in the day it was decided that the balloons were not enough and a party hat, bow tie and "It's my birthday, please sign my balloons" sign should also be adorned. Amongst other things, this resulted in the Cafeteria breaking into "happy birthday" over lunch and our colleges repeating the exercise (with a chocolate chip muffin with 3 candles in) at our meeting at the end of the day!
*[Although the balloons were a fantastic idea in theory, when I had to start telling little Korean kiddies who'd puckered up only just enough courage
Meju Flower
A beautiful traditional restaurant to say "I'd like a red balloon please" that I couldn't get the balloons off the string they were tied to and that they couldn't have one, then making a run for it before their mom filled them in and they pulled out their bottom lip shiver, I decided to put orders aside and leave them in our ODP office]
D took me out to a place called "Meiju Flower" in the evening far an uber traditional Korean dinner. This place was incredible! The meal started with a bowl of creamy sweet corn, kimchi soup (you can run, you can hide... but no matter where you go YOU WILL NEVER ESCAPE THE KIMCHI!!), a bottle of warm brown water and a bottle of cold normal water. What followed was the most unbelievable mix of textures and tastes all magnificantly decorated with delecate flowers. We counted 22 dishes in total, each completely different to the rest. I have never in my life enjoyed trying to keep food down so much, this was probably the best meal I have ever experienced! ... I suppose if you eat any meal where every bite is a surprise, where the only thing you're absolutely
Incredible food
Little plates that each look like artworks sure of, is that what you're about to taste will be something to reset tasting mindset! We had spicey, crunchy, gooie, wet, sweet, bland, salty, (you fill in the blank_________ ) all in one bite! My favourite was one of the meals that came toward the end which came in a small Potjie kos pot with rice and strips of sea weed and it's side dish of caviar we were told to mix in. This dish had lasting entertainment too, even after our complimentary mints, on the trip home, one of us would end up finding a stowaway fishegg in a secret spot in our mouth and before being able to stop what we knew we'd regret, we'd bite into it and experience that familiar pop of sweet fishyness! (Kinda what I'd imagine an eyeball would be like...)
I confess, we did have to buy an oasis of happiness that came in the form of a lemonade type drink they call cider just to have
something familiar! But can you imagine a whole meal where almost no two bites are the same?! ...pretty nuts!
The whole thing was utterly fantastic!
And then to top it off, when
Your table...
No English menu, no English waiters, but what an amazing place to be eating! we asked the waiter if he'd call a taxi for us, he got onto to his phone, disappeared for a bit and returned with his keys to personally drive us back!
What a great day...
