Friday June 23rd I woke up relatively early in the morning and headed to the shower, which are outside the building on a sort of balcony. We then went outside to buy water as we were both really thirsty. It took a while to find a place open and on the way back we found a nice fruit stand. I bought an orange (2MOP, or 0.25$) and Richard bought bananas and mango from a cool little old lady who pointed at our bottle of water, then her cold drink refrigiratore and said: tomorrow tomorrow! Too bad I'm not staying in Macau because I like sympathetic store (or fruit stand) owner and I would have definately gone back. We ate our fruit in the room and then Richard departed for the border and then Guangzhou. He is ... read more

After just a day of rest, we were off to Tagaytay once more this time to celebrate Nanay's birthday. We had seen the Caleruega Church and learned of its campsite 3 days prior to this trip and had planned to go back to camp there. We oh so love the place - lots of trees, cool weather, nice grass covered lawn, the sound of creatures all around - perfect for staying overnight. We asked nanay and carlo, ikee's cousin, to come with us. Ikee and Boyet did the reservation the day before while I was enrolling for the 1st sem. Lunch was at View site Restaurant. We had filipino food - bulalo, steamed pla-pla, adobong kangkong, and ensaladang talong. The rest of the day was basically the same as what we had done during Ikee's birthday. ... read more

I must say that Singapore is a very beautiful city. It is quite clean and reminded me very much of Japan. When we left JB in Malysia we were told that it would only take 30 minutes to get to the Singapore airport. Appearantly that 30 minutes is more like an hour and a half. So we were trying to catch a flight Saturday morning and after it took much longer than expected to get threre, we were cutting it very close. Then the taxi driver dropped us off at the wrong terminal and we had to catch another one to the right terminal. So after all this happens we finally get to the airport one or two minutes after they close the check-in counter. Needless to say we missed our flight, but that was ok ... read more

John Thomas Lynch, my grandfather, has been an enigma to me all my life, not only because he is the man I was named for yet never had the opportunity to meet, but because no one besides my Uncle Kevin ever had a conversation with him about his war experiences. It’s hard to write this particular blog without going into too much history about the U.S. military campaign in the Philippines, mainly involving their strategic withdrawal from Manila to the Bataan peninsula and the island of Corregidor and subsequent surrender of all U.S. & Filipino forces in the Philipines to the Imperial Army of Japan, but I’ll attempt to make it brief. I’ve heard the stories since I was a small boy about my grandfather’s role in WWII and despite all the papers and essays I’ve ... read more

I made it (Day 1)The beach here is pretty amazing. The water is a nice emerald green color. Or maybe it's turqoise. I took an overnight ferry to Boracay from Manila. I was a little late leaving for the airport, but was able to flag down a taxi after 10 or so minutes. The driver was really nice. He took a shortcut because the traffic was really bad. We made it to the ferry terminal in plenty of time. The guards talked to me and asked the driver to pop the trunk. Later I learned that a bomb blew up a ferry in Manila harbor a year or so ago. I got through the ticketing area, managing to fight off people trying to push ahead and break in line. They took my photo and I walked ... read more

Sagada, Mt. Province Philippines June 1, 2006 It’s 4:20 PM and am still here in the office, got to work first! Can’t wait to see the hidden beauty of the mysterious place, Sagada. Left the office exactly 6:00 PM, got to Meanne’s office at about 20 minutes. We had dinner at Tokyo-tokyo in Greenbelt and left their office at around 8:00 PM. We were at the Autobus terminal around 8:45 PM. When we arrived there were few foreign nationals waiting also for the bus bound for Banaue. I still can’t believe myself that I will finally be going to Sagada. We planned this around April and now, we are really going! The bus left around 10:00 PM. The bus was full with different people from all walks of life and with different dialects. Oh well! might ... read more

First humid contact (Day 1) Arrived late last night in Manila. Things have changed a lot at the airport since I was here in 1998. For one, customs was a lot more organized and seemed a bit like entering Japan. And now they keep the awaiting guests in an area far from the taxi's. Well, I walked away from the airport a bit and met a policeman. It was late, after 11pm. The streets were pretty empty. He flagged down a taxi, but since I was going nearby the driver didn't want to drive me. Well, the cop flagged down another taxi, and by this time the first driver came back and said "ok, I'll take you." He started off but wouldn't turn on his meter. I heard that at a late hour like this you ... read more

Hey Charmaine. When I wrote that I was simply posting my impressions. You have to understand that we both come from very different places and have very different experiences. In no way am I saying that Cebu is a bad place or anything of the sort. I was simply expressing my reaction to my experience. In the area that I was located it was the "ghettot". Every experience I have is amazing and I dont want you to think that I dont appreciatte it. Im sorry you took my blog the wrong way. ... read more

Hey you all I am in Cebu until tommorow morning. Tommorow we fly off to Boracay, I am so excited. The last few days are definitely the cool down period since we have been so frantic running around traveling all over the place. Today we went to Bohol and went on an eco-tour. Eco-tourism is basically tourism set up that is sustainable with no detrimental effects or strains on the environment. We went to a river where the community has set up a community based developmental protection system that seeks to protect the river and succesfully run an eco-tourist venue. This place was really neat. Much of the day was spent traveling as we were taking ferries to and from the island. Our day started at 5 am and we got back around 6. It was ... read more
