There were 9 people supposedly coming with us for this trip, then one by one everyone was backing out until there was just Janet and I as the last ones standing. The expected one and a half bus ride from Cubao (Metro Manila) to Olongapo City took us three hours; someone probably miscalculated (ehem!). Olongapo City is quite organized, less dirty and well managed compared to Manila. Adjacent to the City was our main destination, The Tree Top Adventure which was located at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone (where until 1992 was once the largest United States naval base in Asia). We did not exactly know how to get to there, so I have previously asked for directions from a Tree Top employee. The direction given was to take the Victory Liner bus from Metro Manila ... read more

Dear all, We are now three hours north of Manila in a place called Subic Bay and came here by bus on Thursday. We are staying in the city called Olongapo which is right next to an area called Subic Bay Free Zone. This is a strange area that used to be a naval base and now has a few hotels, restaurants and some duty free shops. The main reason to come here is for the wreck diving as there are about six big wrecks sitting just off of the coast. Having been here for four days we are ready to move on. I mentioned in my last blog that we had been offered diving work over Christmas on an island called Mactan. This seemed like a great offer but we needed to find a room ... read more

It was a weekend well-spent in Subic. We planned this weekend with the kids and made sure there's a day to enjoy swimming and just bumming around, a day with the dolphins at Ocean Adventure , and a day at the Zoobic Safari to check out the tigers and other animals in the zoo. On Our Way to Subic Early morning, and we were ready for our 3 hour journey to Subic, the former American military camp which has been transformed into a Freeport Zone as well as a major playground . It actually took less than 3 hours as we drove through the Northern Luzon Expressway (NLEX), past the San Fernando Exit, then into the new Subic-Clark-Tarlac express way or SCTex. This relatively new expressway connects Subic Bay to the Clark area, just a half ... read more

The 6th Terry Larrazabal Bike Festival was held at Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Zambales, Philippines. It was a 3 day bike festival which included road races, mountain bike downhill, mountain bike cross-country, trials, and BMX freestyle and jumping and of course triathlon. Triathlon as a sport has now become popular among celebrities, mountain climbers, swimmers, bikers and marathoners. Dennis decided to join the triathlon event of the 6th Terry Larrazabal Bike Festival a month ago and planned for this trip to Subic. The Subic International Hotel was fully booked so he looked for another hotel near the location of the race which was Camayan Resort. Camayan Resort then was also fully booked so he booked online at Bay...near the SBMA board walk. However, a week before the race, Camayan Resort called up and informed him that ... read more

Yellow! We have arived in Subic Bay and enjoyed a fleeting moment of being on holiday late yesterday afternoon, but Matt didn't last and the fever returned with a vengence. In the middle of the night things got bad enough to warrent a trip to the medical centre. There were no taxi's available at that time so the manager of our hotel kindly drove us down there and we now have a diagnosis of Tonsilitus. At least we now don't have to worry that it is malaria or dengue fever or goodness knows what, but nervertheless is not good. The drugs we had been using are the right ones but apparently Amoxycillin wouldn't have touched the sides and we are now in possesion of something suitably stronger and it should be only a few days until ... read more

Me, Apple and JJ took the tiring bus ride to Olongapo and Subic Bay. We'd been before but didn't know the area well - we initially wanted to stay within SBMA - the old US Navybase - but accomodation there is v expensive, so we stayed in an area 20 minutes away called Barrio Barreto. Arriving there we were a little concerned about the possibility of a seedy side - a hangover from the US base. Travelling with a child it makes you more aware about the seedy behaviour of some westerners there, so we didn't spend much time at all in Barreto. I spent the 4 days there diving during the day. The dive school/shop I used was Blue Rock Resort - we didn't stay there, but for Diving it was first class. My instructor, ... read more

My officemates and I were at the Zoobic Safari at Subic Olongapo last Sunday February 11. We left Manila on Saturday after our 8:00 - 1:00 P.M. office work. My travel and adventure was spent with 3 of my officemates. We meet Tessa @ SM Manila at around 2:00 PM and headed out! The drive was a little over 3.5 hours, including a stop for gas. Along the way, we saw Mt. Pinatubo at a distance and lots of fruits stands along the road. I took pictures of the acres of acres of rice paddies lining the highway on our way to San Fernando Exit in Pampanga. We arrived at Subic International Hotel @ around 5:30 PM. The hotel I must say was old and not as what we expected it to be. But nevertheless we ... read more
