This is Lesley posting our next update. Honestly, I don't know where to start; there's so much to share in the few days we've been here. Pastor Ely keeps us busy which we like. Thursday, we visited a VBS at one of the satellite churches Brother Richard pastors. Lots of kids from the area attended. One of my favorite parts was listening to their songs. The song I can't wait to teach my kids is "Do you know about Jesus" and it's sung to the tune of "Take me out to the ballgame." I have a video of it that I will try to post, but it might be too large. I was asked to teach grades 4-6 which I thought meant helping one of the teachers. However, Brother Orlando took me up in front of ... read more

The trip was tough but from the moment we landed it has been incredible. We attended a funeral last night that Pastor Bishop was asked to preach. The father of Pastor Ely's wife's sister-in-law was killed in a motorcycle accident and we were all asked to attend. The tradition is quite different as the deceased is laid in a casket inside the home and friends and family spend days and nights around the bereaved. playing cards, eating, and having a generally good time. Ladies from Pastor Ely's church sang a Tagalog song which was incredibly beautiful even though we did not understand a word. Pastor Ely asked Pastor Jerald to present the Gospel to about 50 people who had never heard the Gospel presented. I watched as he explained how the body may be laying dead, ... read more

What better way to say farewell to the Year of the Tiger than to get up-close with them. But I'll get to the tigers later. We'll start with how the day started: another early-morning drive to Tarlac and later to Subic. It was a holiday, thanks to a quirk in a Philippine law that moves holidays to the nearest Monday (December 30 is Rizal Day), and it was just your regular large Filipino family departing the city to spend the day in some place other than the... uh, city. I have been going to Subic since fourth-grade. My first trips were in the summer of the mid-90s with my uncle and cousins fishing for talakitok using the shrimps we purchased very early at a market in Olongapo. I would go home very thrilled at having the ... read more

Olongapo: Bits and pieces Olongapo is derived from "Ulo ng Apo", which means head of the chieftain. You will be overwhelmed by the slogan welcoming you in bold letters written on the wall or along the highway, which says " Fighting for Excellence" and "Bawal ang tamad sa Olongapo." You will be fascinated by the active night life of the people, where the nights are like days and the days are like night. You will be enliven by the colorful jeepneys and tricycle which represent the transportation system of Olongapo City. You will know that people just call Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority as the gate, "loob", Subic which later on confuse you with Subic town. You will be annoyed with those taxi barkers, who follows and offer you to ride their taxi. Plus the taxi, they're ... read more

Perhaps life is like a journey where everyone moves on forward and not backward. Perhaps life is like a story where every pages is filled with various experiences which begins, continues and comes to an end. Perhaps life is like a song where every melody speaks of the rythm of the universe. I have asked my self over and over again, Where am I now? For 25 years of my stay here on earth, I wonder what things I made which have helped other people or not. I couldn't name them actually but I think I have made some things which made me close to my best version and some which made me to be at my worst sometimes. Of course, these involves major decision like schooling, family matters, love life, health, relationship, self-esteem, learning, etc. ... read more

There are a multitude of activities to do on base in Subic Bay, it's a good thing, else I might have succumbed to the disturbing activities off base... NO! Not those that I've discussed previously, I'm talking about spending way too much money on massages everyday. That's the only other productive, though still possibly shady, activity that I will participate in off the base. There's a yacht club, zoo, marine world, a few nice restaurants and a cute little beachfront area. While Jeremy was still around, we decided to check out the Zip-line company. I invited Steve along, one of the watchstanders who is also an Army National Guard Major. He's the SAR swimmer who filled Kyle's SAR spot on the ship. He's a great guy, with a quick wit and just enough country to ... read more

'Tis getting close to the season for holiday celebrations, from Turkey Day to Christmas, Diwali to New Year's celebrations... such a fun time of year. Unless you're the depressive types, quite a few military get that way when they're away from home. The time mostly of gorging oneself with ridiculous amounts of food and alcohol, avarice through expectation of gifts, friends and family. It can be quite stressful or joyous. As a kid, I got used to my Dad being gone on boats for many holidays, birthdays too... I've known what I was getting myself into when I joined the Navy. Super duper long distances away from home, missing all those same holidays that I sometimes begrudged my Dad's career for. As I got older, I understood that my anger was selfish and really unproductive ... read more

On a previous visit to Subic Bay, the mighty RICHARD E. BYRD Sailors had completed a community relations project to work on the women's center in Olongapo City. Money was raised, shoes and blankets were purchased, benches were built, repairs were made, and they painted a good amount of the place. I wasn't on the ship at the time, but heard many times the warm and fuzzy feelings that the crew had from their hard work. Upon confirmation of our Voyage Repair in the Philippines, the talks began again. What are we going to do this time? I knew Jeremy would be coming for a visit and I had no knowledge of the area, since it was my first visit. I was not going to be the one making the arrangements, I didn't want to ... read more

Looking around for a legitimate dive shop, I am quite concerned about getting Jeremy "safe" gear. I mean, I have my own, I'll be okay, but every shop I go into treats me like a child and Jeremy lets me do the talking when it comes to diving. Smart man Anyway, I keep getting annoyed, so we go down to have some lunch in the Barrio. It's not too crazy during the day and Blue Rock is a pretty nice spot. In essence, it doesn't have as many hookers and the food is good, though the beach hawkers are just as annoying as the guys outside the pier gate. We see a dive flag. Jeremy had googled diving and Blue Rock had been a listing, so we walk over to check it out. We talk ... read more
