We left El Nido on the 9.30am mini bus after a big drama when the mini van drove off with our small packs on board before we could stop it. All our documents money cards and passports were in them. Very worrying! The man at the bus station assured us that it would return in a few minutes. It did finally returned 15 minutes later packed with a group of tourists they’d picked up on the roadside also wanting to go to Puerto Princessa only returning to the bus station to pick up a ‘spare wheel!’ Us??? Fortunately our bags had been dumped in the back and after retrieving them we had the job of squeezing ourselves onto the remaining seats. So much for getting to the bus station early to get a good seat! Once ... read more

After a good night’s sleep we woke refreshed and ready to start our laid back island life . Picture this if you can: A small island out in the South China Sea. No towns or villages or roads or even pathways. A collection of 15 bungalows constructed with raffia walls and thatched rooves, no glass in the windows and no locks on the flimsy doors. A restaurant and bar to serve the temporary residents of the bungalows, most of who visit for a few days to a few weeks, flowing in and out like the tide. A white sand beach, sprinkled with remnants of sun bleached white coral, shelves gently into a pale blue ocean that changes to a deeper blue where the coral reef begins. Days can be spent relaxing in a shady spot ... read more

We knew that navigating the Philippines was going to be a challenge at times. Boats are the main mode of transportation, an there are often multiple ways and costs to get from one place to another. Our journey from Sabang to North Pandan was a fine example of this. We set off at about 9:30am on a private bangka boat to Abra de Ilog which is about 1.5hrs away. The ride in our little bamboo supported boat was most pleasant, until we had to jump out of it into waist deep choppy water. Needless to say we weren't dressed for it so had to sit with wet bottoms for the next three hours on a bus to Sabaylan. When we arrived we had to get a tricycle (motorbike and sidecar), to the port where we caught ... read more

North Pandan is a small, privately owned resort island just off the west coast coast of Mindoro in the Philippines. It has a pale-sand beach that bends and curves as it follows two sides of the island in an unbroken sweep of silica. Studding the sand a few metres above the high water mark are hundreds of coconut palms, all leaning with their heads bowed in supplication towards the clear warm waters of the Mindoro Strait. Between the palms are strung several hammocks and just behind them are to be found the resorts accommodation, some rather fancy wood, rattan and bamboo bungalows with enormous raised wooden porches that contain comfy sofas, armchairs and occasional tables. The view from our bungalow, which I can see now as I raise my eyes from my netbook's screen, is a ... read more

Months before hearts day, I was excited - not because I found the day itself worth celebrating, but because I'll set foot on one of my dream destination in the country: BATANES. Leaves? Approved! Savings? Enough! Tickets? Ready! Companions? Game!. Excitement? Overwhelming! Days rolled by, but the unwanted occurred. ZEST AIR CANCELLED ALL THEIR FLIGHTS TO BASCO. No more trip to Batanes! Looking at the bright side, it was just strike 1 for me, not like some friends of mine... Peace friends. Batanes is not yet for me. Maybe next Valentines? We'll see. Suddenly I'll be staying home on a supposed to be adventure weekend. That can't be! I scanned for the parallel tours which I can transfer to. Calaguas is too soon. Donsol. unfamiliar. Apo Reef & Pandan Island. hmm. 2 hits in 1! Seems ... read more
