Admittedly, it was probably a mistake to party till 6:30 AM after 2 days of flying on my first night in Manila. Especially since my plan was to wake up at 8 Am to ride a horse up a volcano in the town of Tagaytay and Lake Tal. So, I was going to go to sleep 9ish, which turned into a couple of beers with the French and Canadians in the hostel, which turned into a few more beers, and then a ridiculously belligerent cab ride to republic club accompanied with belligerent French songs the whole way. The club was sweet. 600 Pesos cover ($15 - more than I ever spent in Austin to get into a club and in the Philippines, that's an average day's salary). Dancing and drinking with the locals and fellow travellers, ... read more

Our escape from Manilla was a trip to Taal volcano for a few days. We had spent ages trying to contact hotels, but none of them had bothered to get back to us. People told us that it's a popular destination for both locals and tourists, therefore it was advisable to book in advance, but we decided to take a chance and get the bus anyway. We left most of our things in a locker at the hotel and packed a small bag each to take with us – it was so nice to be travelling light for once. We boarded the bus and paid our 85peso (£1.20) for the 2 hour journey. Where could you get to on a bus in the UK for £1.20!? The bus soon filled up with passengers, packages and food ... read more

Lake Taal,Tagaytay. Christmas Eve was at Lake Taal in Tagaytay with Squish's family. For those of you who are not aware, Taal is the world's smallest active volcano. Having said that – it is in a lake formed in the caldera of an older (“now dormant/extinct”) volcano. I'd been here before (2000) but had only seen it from the upper edge of the caldera (and Google Maps of course), but this time we stayed at a resort on the shores of the lake. Quite a different experience. Met a retired United pilot (Rick) who is the resident expert on Taal (I know because he told me several times) who told me that Taal is a lake within a lake within a lake – 3 lakes in all. We made do with seeing one. Rick is also ... read more

*Sorry about the pictures, doubles, etc., the internet has been hit or miss for about a week now, and i'm not exactly sure what's gonna make the blog or not* Our second day in the Philippines was going to consist of a day trip outside of the mayhem that is Manila, about thirty miles to the south. As trip planning usually goes, our original ideas of getting to the northern part of the country ended up being a bit grandiose for the time we had on the ‘mainland.’ We thought we’d get our nature fix in the way of the active Taal Volcano. What is described as, ‘rising majestically from the middle of Taal Lake.’ All we needed to do was grab a bus to Tangaytay city, catch a tricycle to Talisay, jump on a boat ... read more

Das ... read more

Photos of my trip in 2008. Had about 4 days in Sabang to relax and chill out. After that I checked out Lake Taal for a day or two. Then I took off to a small place on Luzon called Donsol. The reason why most people come here is to snorkel with whale sharks. So I spent a few hours on an outrigger boat with about 6 other snorkellers, jumping in every 15 minutes or so to catch a glimpse of these beautiful creatures. We probably had about a dozen chances to swim with them, each lasting from 30 seconds to a few minutes before they would swim away. I must say it was one of the best experiences I have ever had. Highly recommended. Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures of the sharks.... read more

After our very scary trip across the ocean we decided to stay put in Batangas at the nearest available accommodation, Travellers Inn. The accommodation worked out fine even though it had a very strange policy, where you were charged your room price for 16 hours on the first night, and anything over that was extra. We didn't complain, thankful to have a room with electricity, our first proper wash for a couple of days and even better a tv. Batangas proved to be a very lively town with lots of people bustling about. We were both a little bit intimidated at first as many locals were staring at us. We remedied this by smiling at people and often the stares would turn into smiles and acknowldegement. Maybe the locals are curious as to what you're doing ... read more

Yesterday we went jet skiing with Captain Rico Hermoso (aka Jimmy). Jimmy is a family friend and is building a private resort on the shore of Lake Taal - a lake within a volcano. We made an early start from Pasig and got a good run to our meeting point with Jimmy, the Petron station on the Southern Highway, it took about 45 minutes. The meeting time was 8.30pm and we were a bit early so Michael, Justine and I grabbed a cup of coffee from Starbucks, the coffee is much the same as Starbucks in Australia and so is the price. Still it's nice to have a good cup of coffee. Jimmy arrived right on time and we followed him to his resort, probably about another 45 minutes, the builders were working on the main ... read more
