I feel an air of excitement tingling across my face and the back of my neck as the shoreline of Bantayan Island comes into view. I have been on the ferry for an easy and short 75 minutes, and arrival at the island is already imminent. There is a refreshing light breeze across my face as I sit on the forward facing bench, taking in the shoreline of my soon to begin vacation destination. To my left I can see several miles of white sand beach with buildings I can only assume are resorts. To my right, as we get nearer the pier, is the Santa Fe Resort, aptly named after the small town of Santa Fe, which hosts the pier and a majority of the resorts and restaurants on this side of the island. There ... read more

We made Bantayan from Malapascua Island in around 4 hours by boat+bus+ferry, 400 PhP / each although ferry ticket cost 170 pesos, as seniors we paid 120 instead, but only when we were leaving the island. There is also 20% discount on every transport if you are senior over 60. A very beautiful island and very sincere people. We stayed at Marlyns Beach Resort which may be the best for budget, 1200 PhP including breakfast for two. The staff was so friendly and helpful. The islands economy best for chickens 1,400,000 and produces 1 million eggs/ day. Tourism has just started and in the first decade I think will hit the peak. We visited Virgin Island 1 hour sail by the resort’s boat with a German family. We had bought our fish, vegetables and fruits before ... read more

We arrived in Bantayan after a 4-hour bus ride and an hour-long ferry, which were both extremely cheap and well-organized, and the porters were easy to dissuade and no one tried to steal our luggage from the bays under the bus (you fearmongering travel bloggers, please stop writing useless advice!). We were picked up by a driver from our resort (this sounds much fancier than it is, though it did involve a printed! A4 sheet with our names on it) and soon realised that in our haste to get a nice place to stay that was not fully booked we had forgotten to check which side of the island we were on. However, it ended up being totally worth it, even though there was no beach to speak of really, and most of the time the ... read more

All went well with my 1 hour flight from Palawan to Cebu 11 days ago, and no problems getting a metered taxi from the airport to my hotel in the city centre. I must say that Cebu City is not the prettiest city I have ever seen. There seems to be a fair bit of poverty around and quite a few shady characters. For the first time in the 10 months of my latest trip I had a couple of guys on 2 seperate occasions within 30 minutes trying to get close enough to me waiting for a chance to pickpocket me. On my second day in the city I decided to go to the Ayala Shopping Center with Phil, a guy staying at my hotel. I spent the afternoon having a look around the impressive ... read more

After our noon flight from Puerto Princesa to Cebu city, we headed to the north of Cebu island by bus, a three hour trip that brought us to the little port of Hagnaya where the ferry to Bantayan Island leaves. A lunch consisting of barbequed chicken and San Miguel gave us the energy needed for the one and a half hour boat trip to Santa Fe on Bantanyan Island. Immediately after arrival brochures off all kinds were stuffed in our faces, displaying accomodation ranging from 4 star resorts for unaffordable prices to beach bungalows that were more in line with our budget. Some Norwegian I talked to on the boat had already given me the thumbs up about Budyong beach, so when the the guy charged with dragging tourists to this place, we hopped on the ... read more

11:00PM 09/18/2008 Leaving the Office I left the office on the night of Sep19 and hailed a cab going home. Fortunately, i got an MGE taxi and while the driver was driving me home, he asked if I was in a hurry. I told him "a bit", and mentioned that I have a flight at 4am going to Cebu with my girlfriend. He asked me if I want to be picked up, I said "Yes", please pick us up between 1:00 and 1:30am. I stepped in our condo and saw that my girlfriend was still sleeping. She was a bit frustrated that I wasn't able to join her for dinner together with her previous officemates at JGS because I was so busy with work. She was having a bad headache so I let her sleep while ... read more

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven't written in a while; it's been hectic! After the Mindanao Peacebuilding Institute, we spent a few more days in Davao. We went to the beach, and were able to visit with an environmental NGO, Interface Development Interventions Inc. (IDIS), and Bantay Bata 163. The environmental NGO is mainly concerned with the spraying of pesticides on the local fruits and produce, and the side affects it has on the people. Big companies, such as Dole and Del Monte, have been spraying there since the 70s and it wasn't until 2000 that NGOs were informing the locals about the side affects. I'm not quite sure why they weren't informed before; however, many of the locals believe that these companies are spraying (out of their "spraying" zones - fact) because they want to force ... read more
