One way of getting to know more about a place is to explore its myriad of flavors. Since the island province of Catanduanes is rich in marine resources, it is no wonder that their daily staple would consist of the choicest fish such as tangigue, lapu-lapu and malasugue. The people are also into raising cattle and planting corn and nuts. We sampled the sticky rice cakes such as ibus, suman latik, biko and muros (rice cake with coconut meat). We also had dishes such as kinilaw or fish ceviche (fish chunks in vinegar and coconut milk with spring onions, tomatoes, shallots and carrots), grilled fish, kusido (fish soup with tomatoes, onions, cabbage and calamansi), humba (sweetened braised pork), lobsters, nilaga (boiled carabeef in lemongrass broth) and beef tapa (carabeef). Whenever a typhoon is about to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility, you will likely hear or read about Catanduanes in the news. It is no surprise since the island faces the Philippine Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It has become a gateway of typhoons, hence, earning the monicker "The Land of the Howling Winds." Catanduanes is an island province in the Bicol Region located on the eastern part of the Philippines. Despite being on the path of typhoon, the island is teeming with bounties of Mother Nature. There are two airlines that fly to Catanduanes. Philippine Airlines flies from Clark International Airport thrice a week while Cebu Pacific Air flies from Ninoy Aquino International Airport four times a week. Virac is the capital of the island province of Catanduanes. It is a big town covering sixty-three barangays or villages. Upon touchdown, we (my group) made our way out of the airport and walked a few meters to Kemji Resort and Restaurant where we were billeted for the duration of our trip. We had breakfast while planning our trip with some locals we've been introduced to. Then, it was time to explore a bit of the town. Getting around Virac means taking the traysi, the main mode of transportation in town. Our first stop was the Virac Cathedral or the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.
