The menus in the Annapurna trail restaurants all seem to have been copied from Protocols of the Elder Trekkers of Annapurna guide, as they are all pretty much identical, save for the prices, which seem to vary in proportion to altitude and remoteness. They have standard Nepali fare like Dal Baht (lentils with rice), Tibetan specialties like Tibetan bread, breakfast food like pancakes, omlettes, porridge, and spaghetti, lasagne, pizza, Indian food, potatoes, fried rice, chow mein, and even a handful of Mexican options. Sounds like a pretty good variety, but, I assure you, after a week on the trail, there will be nothing you haven't tried. Most of them are even pretty plausible facsimilies of the real thing (except the Mexican), a bit surprising, as I expect most of the chefs have never left their region ... read more

Day 4 on our trek there were not as many caravans because we're off the main supply route. The ecosystem transforms into a surreal forest of huge twisted moss covered rhododendrons (unfortunately not in bloom--but equally beautiful) Tibetan prayer flags--some bright and some tattered and faded, flapping in the breeze everywhere! Glimpses of the giant grand white Annapurnas (most of them over 22,000 ft) peek at us through the trees. We are highly satisfied on our choice of trekking trails to sample not only the Himalayas but the culture as well. Another great lunch on the trail----Rebecca is amazing in her endurance for Dal Bhaat (the national, traditional dish of rice and lentils) The rest of us opt out for noodles, soups and pizzas. Forty five minues before our slog up the steeps to Tadapani--our porter ... read more

We spent the descent sliding on our backsides in the thick snow! After the dizzy heights of Thorung La we expected the rest of the Circuit to be less impressive. How wrong we were! The scenery changed from icy frozen tundra, valleys and peaks to dusty, rocky wasteland. If anything it was even more impressive passing through the old kingdom of Mustang with it's squat stone houses and villages, the Kali Gandaki (deepest canyon in the world), Muktinath temple complex, Poon Hill and the last days to Pokhara. No time to write more. It is something you just have to experience for yourself. ... read more

We Crazy People only rested a few days before starting 16 days Around Annapurna trek. This trek is famous in Nepal for having the best views of the Himalayas, the most interesting variety of landscape. The first half of the trek was a slow and steady ascent and we hit snow in Manang, unusual for this time of year, and there had been avalanches before our arrival. The highlight was the ascent to the dizzy heights of the Thorang La pass at 5416m. Crossing the pass we had to start at 4am for the 1km ascent in the dark under the stars. By the time we got close to the top the altitude obviously affected our thinking as it was on this pass that the two of us got engaged! ... read more

Hey there my family, friends and whoever else feels like reading. Well I have just gotten back from the Annapurna Circuit. The first hot shower and steak was fantastic. For those of you who have not heard of this it's a trek that is approxiamately 220km to 2250km in length that takes you around the Annapurna mountains and many other mountains within the Himalaya Mountain Range. The trek took a total of 14 days commencing at Besisishar, trekking anti-clockwise, finishing in Beni. We had 1 rest day in a villiage called Manang, which is at an altitutde of 3,600m. It was recommneded that we stop here to acclimatise to the altitude. On our rest day we climbed a small hill which took us up to the base of the Gangapurna Glacier and Lake. There is a ... read more

In the first part I told you how we reached the place with the misleading name Himalayan hotel at 2870m. The next morning we started really early, because the clouds like to crawl up the river and start pouring rain rather early. In our 4th day we climbed over 1250m. The path wasn't too steep, which meant it was very long... Nothing comes easy here. As we reached the Machapuchre base camp (3700m) the canyon of the river we followed opened up and we started to understand what we were going to see - the snowy peaks all around us, it started to look even more beautiful. We ordered chocolate cake and Kate brought a candle and we sang happy birthday to Shai that turned 40 today. Unfortunately the cake itself was less edible than a ... read more

After three weeks on Annapurna Circuit we continued straight towards Annapurna Base Camp. We took the route Ghorepani-Tadapani-Chomrong-Himalaya-ABC-Bamboo-Chomrong-Dhampus-Phedi. After getting off the circuit the trail got smaller and there were no more road works. Also there were no donkey caravans and less people walking on the trails. This felt more like trekking again. After walking 11 days up the Marsyangdi river and 8 days down the Kali Gandaki, the trail now went up and down over rivers and ridges daily. There were also much more stairs, the longest we walked had about 2600 stairs near Chomrong, that was a tough bit. From Chomrong to ABC the same trail has to be walked in both directions, coming down was a bit boring since there was not much to see anymore and with 25 days of trekking behind, ... read more
