AFTER BURMA TRAVIS AND I TOOK A SHORT BREAK in Bangkok and then flew to Kathmandu, Nepal. I liked Nepal right away. One of the first things I noticed was that everyone greets you by saying “namaste” and folding their hands together in a prayer-like gesture. The first time I ever heard the word "namaste" was in a travel memoir I read several years ago. The author translated the meaning as, “the seed of the divine in me recognizes the seed of the divine in you.”I fell in love with it immediately – what an amazing way to greet someone! I am thrilled that I get to use it now as part of everyday conversation. We spent our first few days in the extremely hectic and chaotic backpacker district of Thamel and then embarked on an ... read more

The horns have sounded, the hounds have been set loose, the hunt for yeti has begun. To be a good sport though, let's give the infamous snowman a decent head start by taking a pause to fill you in why do we find ourselves at roof of the world. As our idea of a perfect honeymoon was to be a mountain range apart from the comfort zone, Himalayas and its Annapurna massif provided an ideal choice. Especially given that Annapurna is Hindu goddess of abundance, fertility and harvest, hence a fitting place to undertake our first pilgrimage as a married couple. The trek we've chosen is called Annapurna Sanctuary and will have us following a milky glacial river, Modi Khola, for 12 days and about 100 kilometers, to Annapurna base camp, starting point for mountaineering expetions, ... read more

Ninety five kilometres up and down steep stone stair cases, “no problem!” After hearing my brother’s stories about the Annapurna Base Camp Trek it became something I really wanted to complete while in Nepal. What an experience it turned out to be. I shared the physical examination with a motley crew of fellow trekkers; at different times I hiked with Tristan from Guernsey, Iris from Rotterdam, and Rober and Lynda, who bizarrely live ten minutes from the new flat Michelle has secured for us in Amsterdam! The trek began with just Iris and me leaving from the tiny village of Nayapul, reached by a two hour local bus ride starting at 6am in the lakeside haven of Pokhara. From Nayapul we were gently broken in to what was to come with a four hour hike to ... read more

The trek to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) is one of the most popular treks in Nepal. It came highly recommended by other travellers that we’ve met and seemed like a great choice for our first trek in Nepal. We decided to organize the trek by booking a group tour, although it’s possible to do the trek independently and many people do. We had porters for our main gear but we carried day packs, cameras, water, etc. For the first several days of the trek the weather was generally overcast and there wasn't much for mountain views. It would normally rain for an hour or so in the afternoon which was just enough to ensure that we were thoroughly soaked by the time we got to our destination for the day. Thank goodness we kept a dry ... read more

First Impressions Kathmandu presents the traveller with a very special kind of culture shock. Our previous travels have given me the opportunity to use the phrase 'sensory overload' quite liberally: walking the streets of Hanoi, boarding an inter-island ferry in the Spice Islands, getting hopelessly lost in the winding alleys of the medina of Fez...The capital city of Nepal, however, operates on an altogether different level. Arriving in Kathmandu by air in April does not offer the heartstopping views of the Himalayas one might expect. Delhi, which we left barely an hour ago, is baking in forty degree heat. Kathmandu, at an altitude of a kilometre or so, is a little cooler, but sitting in a broad, high-sided valley, it is almost invisible from the air - concealed behind a thick veil of haze. It is ... read more

MANASLU CIRCUIT & ANNAPURNA CIRCUIT in 25 days Walking in Nepal is truly amazing ! Squeezed between India on one side and China on the other this small and colourful country offers some of the best, most beautiful and breathtaking scenery there is making it one of the most unique trekking destinations in the world. In addition to its grand and eye-catching nature the country also hosts rich and interesting cultural traditions which really adds to the adventure of visiting this lovely place. I went back to Nepal for my third consecutive year in October/November 2010. After already completing the Annapurna Circuit + Basecamp in 2008 and Everest Basecamp including Gokyo, Cho La Pass & Kongma La Pass in 2009, I decided I wanted to try something a little bit more different and remote than on ... read more

First up, I’ve got a bit of a confession to make. Truth is, God and I have never been all that tight. I suppose if relationships are built on trust, the fact that neither of us appears to believe in the other probably doesn’t help much. I’m not sure I can be entirely blamed for my lack of conviction, though. Fact is, out of all the pre-school imaginary characters, God did the least to prove he was the real-deal. Both Santa and the Tooth Fairy actually entered my room while I slept and tried to buy my faith with gifts, which you have to admit is a pretty neat trick for the non-existent. Some have since hinted that it was my parents all along, a more likely scenario I have to admit, but what I’m thinking ... read more

Yes I have to admid, this post should have been written some time ago, but things went so fast that I had absolutely no time for this up till now, so here we go: Even before my Chitwan trip, Mike and me decided that we would go rafting. THe fist time we entered the office of Rapid Runners in Pokhara we more or less signed up for the lower Seti trip. But the second time when we came in we changed our minds and wanted something more spectacular, bcs the Lower Seti is a bit dull. THe only thing is that we needed at least 2 other people to join, bcs it was going to be an expedition, with tents and so. They told us that within the 2 weeks that we signed up and started ... read more
