I recently got home from a 18 day excursion to Nepal.... 6 of them were spent going and coming. This was actually 1 day longer than I anticipated. I had bought my round trip tickets thru Qatar Airways. United Airways covers their flights in the USA. The connection time was only 53 minutes. I was a little skeptical, but the United agents assured me this was enought time. WRONG! The United flight took too long to take off and was late arriving into Washington. I was running as fast as possible thru the airport. I got to the Qatar gate 16 minutes before takeoff. Too late for an international flight. So I got stuck in Washington for 24 hours. Due to differing flight schedules with the next day's flights, I ended up losing about 32 hours ... read more

Annapurna Circuit Day 10 Aching muscles - we recognise today that the set of muscles you use to go down is completely different from the ones you use when you go up. Every step hurts and we feel tired after having crossed the pass the day before. Therefore just half a day to Kagbeni from Muktinat and then a lazy afternoon. Annapurna Circuit Day 11 Walking this side of the pass we do not like very much. The path leads mostly on the street that is also used by the motorbikes and ... read more

It's been a minute since I've written so I have to stretch my memory a tad to the days in Pokhara before I left for my trek through the Annapurna region of the Himalaya. After a sometime difficult experience in Kathmandu, Pokhara felt like the Nepal I had come here for. Hardly any honking taxi drivers, absolutely no rickshaws, few begging children, even fewer homeless children - it was a nice relief from the toils of larger Asian cities. With the beautiful backdrop of the Annapurnas and lakeside guesthouses, Pokhara seemed the place to be. We rented a paddle boat and went out on lake Fewa-Tal for the day. A nice relief from the heat aside from the bickering we did with the man who rented us the boat when we returned and found the agreed ... read more

Annapurna Circuit Day 6 We move on to Manang, which is situated on the next plateau on 3500m . The climate changes drastically as the monsoon has no impact here anymore on the weather. It is extremely dry and the sun is burning down. We manage to progress quickly and enjoy an afternoon of sunshine outside one of the noumerus bakeries in Manang. We will spend a rest day for aclimatisation as most trekkers on this route. Because of this the village is well prepared for tourists spending the days and there is even a little cinema (which we did not visit). The highlight of the day - a room with attached bathroom! Weiterlaufen nach Manang, welches auf dem naechsten Hochplateau auf 3500m liegt. Das Klima aendert sich rapide da der Monsoon hier oben keinen Einfluss ... read more

Drive to Besisahar Endless bus drive over bumpy roads is all I can remember - except the two Germans sitting in front of us and talking about the reflexology course they apparently went to the day before (“Did you feel the energy as well…?”). The rest of the drive I slept, which was maybe better as I missed the suicidal overtaking maneuvers the bus driver chose to go for. In the afternoon we reached the not so idyllic village of Besisahar, which hosts a lot of shabby lodges as the Annapurna Circuit starts here. Otherwise it might be that no one would ever mention this place. We stay in one of the less shabby places and look forward to start the trek the next day. Trekking the Annapurna Circuit Dreaming of an adventure like ours? Find out how we did it at JulieAndDariansWorldTourGuide.com 11 Mar 2008 Today was the big pre-trek preparations day, having arrived back in Kathmandu from Chitwan National Park last night. We’ve now been in Nepal for a whole week now without seeing any real mountains or snow, so we’re really hanging out for it now. That might explain why we changed our minds this morning and decided to try and do the entire Annapurna Circuit, rather than just the Jomson trek. It’s a big call, because it will increase our number of trekking days from 10 to about 23, and the highest point is more than 1000m higher. We were sitting in the que at the Indian Embassy waiting to get our visas and Julie just turns ... read more

Following an indeterminable wait at Kathmandu airport (it wasn't clear that anyone knew when or if our flight was supposed to depart), we arrived in Pokhara and were met by our local guide to be taken to our accommodation for the night; Fishtail Lodge. This was a property at the luxury end of Backpacker friendly Pokhara, but had clearly seen its glory days as "THE" place to stay, come and go some years before. Nevertheless, it was nice with its most interesting feature being the method of entering the hotel - the only way to get to the property was via a rowboat or barge - quite an experience with a full pack (anyone who has seen our luggage knows what I'm talking about!). Anyway, after crossing the Phewa Tal (lake) by small canoe to the ... read more

The Annapurna Circuit can easily be divided into two halves. The Thorung La makes a nice crease betwen the up and the down of the trail. If you could imagine an equilateral triangle...The Thorung La would be the point at the top. ***Thorung Phedi...White*** Phedi means foot in Nepalese. This little outpost was situated at, 4,400 meters and this is where we continue our journey around the circuit. After leaving Tilicho Tal (lake) we headed towards the town of Thorung Phedi. The beautiful blues were replaced by sideways rain that was eventually replaced by sleet and then snow. The next morning we were supposed to climb over the pass...another 1000 meters up. It wasn't to be. The snow was higher than our knees and we knew that higher up the mountain anything could happen. The pass ... read more
