Day 21 Travel day.
What is it about travel days that the shit goes on for so long. Up at 7.30am for our last breakfast at Cactus and then back to hotel to do the final packing.
With our flight, for all eight of us, scheduled for 12.50 we headed off for the airport about 10.45 to allow plenty of time to check in and relax. No problem there as the flight was delayed for over an hour until 2.00pm. If we h ad known that, we could have stayed a bit longer at the hotel and had a swim and a drink. Still we needed the time as Dave had to unpack a bag because it was overweight and he had to split into two bags.
Anyways, we spent a few hours at the airport, mainly in Starbucks while everyone had a go at the internet, checking their facebook and email. What a boon the internet is to travellers. Just find a wi-fi hotspot and away you go. And with a little netbook like we’re carrying with us, it just slips into a bag unobtrusively.
We had our one hour flight to KL and then the
fun started. With 15 checked bags and 9 carry on bags we needed a semi trailer but only got an eight seater van. So Stu, Abby and the girls went in the van and Peter, Gina, David and Mary chartered a taxi to carry the rest of the shit to Sarang Galloway, our home for the next seven nights.
We are located at the bottom end of Jalan Bukit Bintang about 7 minutes walk from the main shopping area of KL. A great location, and of course, the local residents have checked us all out. It is a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom old house built around the 1920s. It has been renovated to an acceptable standard and for the price for the eight of us, exceptional value. I would say it is costing us round about less than half of what decent hotel accommodation would cost. Best of all, included in the price is a maid who cooks a local breakfast for us and does the laundry. We also have broadband internet, so it’s just like a home away from home albeit a bit warmer.
Once we all get settled in, we went for a walk up town
as we all needed to cash some money to pay the balance of our accommodation here. We walked up Bukit Bintang to where Gina and I introduced everybody to the pleasures of BB Plaza and Sungei Wang Plaza
It’s hard to describe these malls to people that have never been here, but Sungei Wang is about nine levels of small independent shops of all types. There are 6 malls (alleys) on each level and then you have BB Plaza next door along with a Parkson department store with multiple levels on the other side. If you only have the time in KL to visit one of the multitude of shopping centrres here, the BB/Sungei Wang Plaza is the one to visit.
We had dinner at a Chinese restaurant just outside the front entrance, and I just cannot think of the name of the place. It serves the best food and Gina and Peter have ate here on each of their trips to Kuala Lumpur. Everyone agreed and we then headed off to Times Square.
This is a huge complex, with a shopping centre of about 10 levels, a theme park, bowling alley, condominiums and a hotel
all in the one place. Like a lot things here, the size of the place just boggles the imagination. As it was getting late, we spent only a short time here and found a Krispy Creme doughnut shop and bought some to take home. We then headed back to the home and had coffee and doughnuts and retired for the night.
