Petronas Towers...
Tallest twin towers in the world and highest skybridge in the world... Trip from Melaka was straightforward. We took a bus that took around 2 hours to get to KL but then we stood in traffic for around 45 mins when we got here and realised that we were only about 100 yards from the bus station so we decided to get out & walk. We hadnt walked far before some guy pulled us in to look at a hostel accross the road. It's an old converted cinema 3 floors up between Chinatown and Little India and right next to the bus station. Perfect location. Rooms are ok, not bad for only around GBP1.50 a night (!). It has an internet room below which is fantastic and is how I am able to keep this updated. What is good about the place is that it has a big hang-out area with a widescreen tv and they show movies all day long (and the football last night!) so when the feet give way from walking all day one can just collapse on one of the cumfy sofa's & chill out with other travellers. First night I got here I hit the chinese night market which is where you get all the genuine (!!) designer
goods. They will sell you anything you want, and many things you dont (!). I got away lucky I think, and I got a few good things.
First full day here I walked to the Petronas Towers which you may know was the tallest building in the world, is now the tallest set of twin towers in the world, and has the highest skybridge between two towers. They give out free tickets every morning to take a ride up to the skybridge so I managed to get there early enough to get a place mid-afternoon. Did a bit of window shopping around of the many shopping malls around the place. The good thing about them is that they are air-conditioned so its a good place to cool down from the outside humidity. Talk about sticky, you can't get anywhere without being reduced to a sweaty overheating mess, but everyone is in the same boat so it's just accepted that we're all minging! Anyway, bought myself some crocs shoes as my feet were cut to ribbens by my flap-flaps, and they have been great since. Recommended must-have for any person. In the evening I went for dinner with an american
girl I met in the hostel and then we just flaked in the hostel watching the english football on telly till 3am.
Second day in the capital I had a few bits to do around town including trying to sort out my mobile phone problem. They gave me a new sim card but the system was down and .... oh I give up... my mobile will work locally so it's good for that but it doesnt seem that I will be able to receive messages from people back home. After that I set off for the Batu Caves. These are limestone caves just outside the city. The caves have been converted into a Hindu Shrine (What a sight - you can see from the pics). 272 steps to the top, hundreds of thousands of Hindus make the trip once a year to pay respects to their god. I climbed to the top and was greeted by a load of monkeys which live on top of the mountain. They were quite placid, not trying to steal from visiting tourists like they have been known to! It's the evening now and its raining outside again so tonight will be a chilled
one. I will set off early tomorrow morning for either the Cameron Highlands or the island of Penang. I will look at the Lonely Planet Bible tonight & make a decision.
Until next time...
